Lots of projects but my main one for the week is to sort out my neglected boat. An early finish to the season and a lot of things keeping me busy means that it is in a right state.

A wash and machine polish brings us to this, and by the way the pad is a chemical guys ORANGE lad, not green! You can see some of the oxidisation to be cut away towards the stern of the boat. It took a day to get one side done!

Very tiring working off the pontoon, crouched down and holding the DA at arms length for most of the day.

I don’t know why the pics are sideways, I did rotate them on this site...

As the weather looks as if it's changing back to normal, and I have to come in from the garden, I may be forced to do some of the jobs I have put off for the last half century or so.

I have (although some may doubt it after seeing the picture) already tided up my workshop.
I am now taking the opportunity to attempt to sort out my many containers of nuts, bolts, screws, etc that any good engineer/DIYer has left over after any job.

It shouldn't take too many years!

That looks better than my workshop. Next rainy day I'm going to sort out, label and tidy my boxes of resistors, capacitors and transistors. also renew the leads on all my mutimeters and'scope. As an alternative I could instead have a red hot poker inserted into my rectum. Rolling Eyes 11 GS Bali Blue

Saw this image taken in Kenya recently and it reminded me of when I was a child in the 50's I lived not far from Guy's Motors in Wolverhampton where they made lorries. It was quite common to see a men driving past the house on a lorry chassis (on a temporary wooden seat) with cap on backwards and goggles and overcoat and scarf etc. Presumably delivering them. This became then a British Leyland factory, not sure if it's part of JLR now. Anyone else recall scenes like this?

I remember these well in the 50s & 60s, a common sight driving through the centre of Bristol. In the 50s as a schoolboy I thought that this was an ideal job, probably during my 'train driver syndrome' phase.

I found this quote and picture on line, the picture brought back memories, this driver has a crash helmet, but as Dorset says earlier chassis were driven by men in caps, heavy canvas coats, and googles as worn by motor cyclists at the time.

At home we had a motor bike and side car, and Dad dressed similarly, although we chugged around at about 30 - 35 mph, we knew that we were going to exceed 40mph when Dad turned his cap so the peak pointed backwards. (and we did all of 40 - 45mph)

Quote
I used to see bus chassis being driven past my home in the late 1960's / early 1970's

These were Bristol chassis, made by the state-owned Bristol Bus Works in Bristol, on their way to be bodied by Eastern Coach Works (also state-owned) at Lowestoft.

These chassis were front-engined Lodekka and, later on, rear-engined Bristol VRT type, which were both standard double-deckers of the nationalised Tilling Group, which went on to become the National Bus Company.

I remember too that the drivers wore crash helmets and heavy coats or anoraks and the only weather protection on the vehicle was a temporary plywood panel in front of the driver - some had a small perspex windscreen too, I think.

The famous AEC-PRV Routemaster, being of chassisless construction, was never seen in this state, but there were some wierd looking test mules fitted with Routemaster running gear - but I never saw one in the metal (or plywood)!

New passport just arrived. A blue one just like Boris promised us. So there is some benefit to Brexit after all ! However it, probably means that I am barred from EU countries now.

Ordered mine as it was about to expire & then there would be more paperwork.

Could do the British one online but I will have to wait awhile, but not traveling anytime soon! Easier & cheaper than the Australian one I just replaced. Extortion over here! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Biggest problem was getting an acceptable photo. I got a string of rejections like
Too near the camera,
Not looking directly at the camera
Lips are open
Background wrong colour
This photo is in black and white and at the same time too much colour. !

After about 15 goes with various cameras and phones I attached a note saying that it was a good likeness despite the objections and it was accepted. It looks as if you need to get it to be reviewed by a real person. If you search online then lots of people are having problems recently as it looks as if the scanning software has changed.

Anyway delivered yesterday by a courier who insisted on taking a photo of himself putting it through my letterbox. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It’s not difficult getting a good piccy, but then I did sessions every Monday at 08:30 > 09:00.....never had one rejected but then it was part of my job, but you really would be surprised at some of the “self portraits” that came in moaning about them being rejected Whistle and asking me if I could “manipulate” the image to make it acceptable......I just told them to sit down and (effectively) shut up! Rolling with laughter

The passport piccy rules are quite stringent even down to where the eyes should be within the portrait compared to top of head and chin, only once I had a bloke whose face really did need some very careful jiggling on our photoshop template to get he-is features in the right place.....odd though because he didn’t look odd errr face to face as it were.

And another thing, the rules change from country to country and even if it’s a passport or visa application mug shot, that used to annoy me when the sitter had come back to collect their passport picture to be told “great now to send it to the US visa office”......arghhh! Laughing Regards

David

Spent a few hours last week adding rivet detail to this Focke Wulf 190 . Would have also filled and re-scribed the panel lines too, but really couldn't be bothered. Anyone like to hazard a guess as to the scale ?
