Timing Belt, timing!

Hi All

About to book mine in for the 7 year (84 month, 112k mile) service.

I'm being told it is a timing belt replacement service.

However, previously been told by LR dealer it's due at 9 years.

The LR service sheet shows at 144k miles = 9 years.





But, when I go online and download the 84 month service sheet checklist from the LR service portal, sure enough, there's the timing belt change.

Can anyone shed any light?

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Baltic Blue

Land Rover recently changed their recommendation on cambelt changes reducing the interval to 7 years. Having had a cambelt break early (before it should need changing) in an Astra many years ago I’d rather pay for a cambelt change than the repairs or replacement engine that cambelt failure results in.

That explains the change between the documents, thank you very much!

Yeah you don't want them going wrong, but i'm being quoted £740 for the service, so want to be sure it's needed.

You can buy the Kit from peugeot / citroen (same ...) and do the job by any independant mechanic ... would be quite cheaper I guess than from Land Rover

Hi Arese, yes, I wondered this also. Am getting some quotes from indies, but a bit of googling so far shows them to be similar pricing.

Water pump and cambelt replacement was ITRO £370 all up for my SD4 in November. Local Indy (Portsmouth) with LR trained people, they don’t just work on Land Rover mind but have a good online reputation.

Even gave me a courtesy car as they wanted it overnight to be sure in case any other little things cropped up during the process delaying completion.

Shop around.

yes around £400 is standard in the midlands area.

do make sure they do the belt, the tension pulley and the water pump at the same time.

I bought a Gates Kit (inc Water Pump) and did it myself a while back with the the extra locking pins. To be honest, I'd probably leave it to an independent mechanic for the next one due to the arse puckering torque required for the crank bolt removal and install.

Which adjustable universal tool to engage in the ring gear teeth did you use. Got mine to do in a couple of months, so getting all my ducks in a row.

Well, I used one from a cam setting kit I have for a Ford Focus but you can buy the flywheel locking tool separately. It’s this one. You'll need a couple of nuts and bolts that go through the starter motor bolt holes.

It's so easy to slacken the Crank Shaft Pulley Bolt with a torque multiplier.
