Insurance Query After A Bump

Was kindly hit from behind while in stationary traffic this morning and it's done a reasonable amount of damage to the bumper and boot lid. The car that hit me was far worse off.

The driver was on Motability so didn't know his insurance details but we have swapped details, taken photos etc and I suggested he found out his insurers details and gave them a call and pass them my details.

As I've only ever dealt with an insurance claim when my car was covered by Audi Assist, who took care of everything, I don't really know what to do.

Should I contact my insurer? Wait until I have his insurance details? Try and do it all through his insurer, or will that still equate to me having made a claim?

Also, as the bumper is cracked and off its mount, the parking sensors are not happy and the boot lid is dented in, where should so get it sorted? Take it a Land Rover dealer? I'm gonna need a courtesy car as I have kids to ferry to school.

Sorry for all the questions but I'd like this to be as smooth as possible. Learned to drive in 2011.

You are not at fault, unless he is prepared to pay privately to have your car repaired to your satisfaction then its going through insurance companies. The only details you need are his name, address and reg number. Your insurer will take it all from there and will arrange to have it repaired by one of their recommended re[pairers. Does your insurance policy include courtesy car? The costs will initially be met by your insurer but then they will be reimbursed by the at fault party - assuming he is insured? Get in touch with your own insurance company, pass the details on, and let them deal with it

That's what you pay them for Thumbs Up

If it is not your fault them you should be able to claim for a hire car whilst yours is in the body shop, in fact a lot of decent body shops will provide curtesy cars as part of their costs. MY13 HSE Lux Santorini Black

Thanks everyone. I've just updated my own policy with the addition of a hire car, effective immediately. Hopefully that'll do the job. But if not Ill see what I can arrange. Learned to drive in 2011.

Be prepared for your own insurance company ramping up your premium too. Once they know of the incident they will likely tell you that your risk level has changed and thus a higher premium to cover that changed risk is necessary.

My insurer did the very same thing but the, “fine, I’ll go be off elsewhere then”, got the premium back to the £5 less than the previous renewal.

Oh yes, I fully expect any insurer to increase premiums as soon as they sniff a claim. And of course you have to declare it on any new insurance either so you can't escape it. Learned to drive in 2011.

Many decades ago, I had a young insurance agent tell me that buying insurance was simply for my peace of mind nor for making a claim. I never used that insurance company ever again but he was simply being honest. Now, I am rural and use a broker and they worked real hard with my current insurer so I know it's about money but also the service. Just make sure to bitch and whine politely if they try to jack your premium........the squeaky wheel is a real thing.

When some silly person slid (snowy weather) into my Lexus when it was parked I told my insurer and the same day Imgot a call from the third parties insurer and they just took over and dealt with everything, hire car, out of pocket expenses, the lot.....also got the hire car (new Mercedes ML 2014MY) over the Christmas break as the body shop was shut for two weeks.....best accident I’ve ever had Rolling with laughter

My premium the next renewal went down as well.......never won the lottery though Rolling Eyes Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

I hope its not too late to say this but make sure that you store, and then provide, any photos or witness statements that you have. Many years ago I got sideswiped, while stationary, by a lorry trailer. I chased after the lorry and the driver apologised. However, a month or so later, he denied that anything had happened. (When my insurance company approached him)

My claim failed, and I realised that I should have taken some reg numbers of cars in the queue before I shot off after the lorry. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Yup, got photos, dashcam footage (at least of the noise of the hit while stationary) plus got all the drivers details including his mobile number which I tested there and then. Learned to drive in 2011.
