Took the train into Brum on Monday and passed "Tornado" sitting on a siding on its way back from Bristol, I think - in gleaming green livery (was originally in blue)

Sadly didnt get my phone out in time to grab a pic - so this will have to do...

Thanks for the lovely photos.

They bring back the memories of travelling around the country by steam in my teens and twenties.
Somehow the steam/smoke/oil smell made it more romantic, and the compartmented carriages made people more willing to talk to one and other.

Long journeys through the night on mail or milk trains, with their long stops at stations, made it easy to get a bit of sleep on the train, so you were ready for a day's action at your destination.

Those were the days, I understood the ticketing system, and there were staff at stations to help you.

It was the GWR King Class locos that pulled a lot of my trains from Bristol to Darlington.

United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Orkney Grey

My father was a GWR driver and growing up in the 50's would often go down to Old Oak Common sheds and wonder about. Knew most of the drivers etc as we lived on a railway estate at West Acton. Spent many a journey on the footplate. No elf and safety in those days. During the war years dad was a fireman and would probably throw 6 ton of coal into the firebox on a trip from Paddington to Penzance. They made them tough in those days. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Had the joy of being fireman on the footplate of a steam engine on the North York Moors Railway, on the journey from Pickering to Grosmont....... and I didn't have to pay for the pleasure.

Cracking experience. Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Ain’t that the truth.......Kings + to Edinburgh quite a bit of coal to be shifted......even though crews changed enroute (corridor tender second crew slept/travelled in first carriage) and as for health and safety it was just the inspectors that needed avoiding when footplating/cabbing......first loco I ever drove was an 08 diesel shunter at Hornsey Goods (I was about 11) last one was a class 90 out of the Cross for Edinburgh (crew changed at York)......wow I miss my Uncle he was the only LNER/BR employee to have cleaned (started at 14 yrs old!), fired and driven the Scotsman, Uncle Ron passed away last January Sad

RIP.....Ron Kennedy Regards

Bloody marvellous day out. Not long got home. Fantastic day out and we were photographed at every stop by dozens of train buffs. We're stuffed to the gills though - it was food, food, food all the way there and back plus afternoon tea when we were there. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Service was superb. Only slight gripe was the amount of soot and ash that came in through the windows but I suppose that’s to be expected! A few pics of the train and the grub!

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Mauritius Blue

I have a memory when I was young, we travelled down to Sheffield by train to see some relatives.

The train arrived on time, and my day gave a rather oily driver a half crown for being on time. I don't know if this was something that a lot of travellers did, but my dad wasn't the only one to tip the footplate crew that day. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018
