I changed the diesel filter of my RR evoque but the "water sensor" in the bottom of the filter was missing.

Is that sensor important for the performance of the filter?

It's always missing.
I don't think it's ever fitted.

Are you sure it wasnt fitted on Evoques ?
My 2014 SD4 FL2 has a wiring loom which shares some common components with the Evoque at the time. It has a plug connector to attach to a water sensor which isnt there on the FL2. Its just blanked off on the FL2 fuel filter. Jules

Had a look at some websites - the Evoque service kit come either with or without a "pollution sensor".
I have no idea what that is but maybe my little blue plug would connect to it if my FL2 was an Evoque ? Jules

yes, I've that blue wire conector, but the "sensor" is missing in the filter....

maybe when i changed the filter they forgot to take it from the old filter....

I have the connector on my 62 plate HSE Lux as well, but the filter has nothing to plug it into - only a blank hole for the plug.

Replaced the fuel filter on my SD4 2013 and found to my surprise a sensor attached to the old filter. (to my surprise as many posts on the forum indicates that the FL2 do not have this sensor fitted).
The new (genuine) filter came with the sensor hole blocked off and could not take the sensor.
I recently had a "water in fuel" DTC and reduced performance a couple of times - therefor the filter replacement exercise.
Comparing the part number on the old and new filter showed the same number but some other codes different. See pictures.
Decided to open up the blocked sensor hole on the new filter to accept the sensor.
Carefully drilling out the blocking material, the hole simply opened up as the drill bit started to bite. It appears as if a thin membrane type disc was moulded into the bottom of the sensor hole with a shear groove for easy removal.
Installed the new filter with sensor in place, attached the blue connector and suck the diesel through from the the final delivery port on the filter until no more air bubbles came through. Connected final delivery pipe and she started first time.

Perhaps the sensor is only used on vehicles destined for countries where diesel fuel quality is variable. Other than that I have no idea why we dont see the sensors on UK vehicles. Jules

Serviced a friend's TD4 S (2012) last week and no sensor found on the fuel filter.
Will be interesting to see if my other 2013 SD4 HSE do carry a sensor too.

Yes poor fuel quality is a definite possibility here, although not generally found. More to be expected when overlanding in African countries far off the beaten track. 2013 SD4 SE (hers)

Mine was missing recently and the dealer instructed how to fit it (Freelander 2 / LR2).

You have to remove it from the old filter and simply install it in the new one, it will crack the hole by itself when you attach it.

He said it doesn't serve for anything other than telling you if your diesel has water, but I bought a new one anyway.

Now, my car during the start, it always says that there is water in the fuel, but there isn't, probably something is not working properly

I replaced the diesel filter yesterday and now the message is gone.

I didn't change the fuel so I'm guessing that the message was intermittent or there was water in fact.

But since the engine always behaved properly and the message always disappeared a few seconds later after starting, I'm guessing it was misplaced or something, anyway, one less issue in the car!

The message is back during the start-ups and OBD2 is registering a mal function in the sensor, which does not make sense since it is new.

I guess the connector or the cable is not working properly or maybe my battery is dropping the voltage during the startup.

Definitely get your battery tested under load as a low battery causes endless issues with the Freelander 2 electronic modules. Just do a search on batteries on the forum and you will see. Since you are in a hot environment do you fill your tank to capacity? Maybe you have moisture building up in it somehow? Just spit balling......
