United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Bali Blue
Power Transfer Unit

Hi all

Newbie here so be gentle.

Done a quick search of the topics and I can only find a couple of references to the PTU both of which are old and not really relevant.
I know there's loads of info on the infamous rear diffs on these Freeloaders but I can't find much on the front transfer units. Has anybody had one fail and fitted a recon unit? Again, I can't find any info on the ease (or not) of replacing one. Bell offer recon units but I was wondering how they are to work on.......

Any advise / steers greatly appreciated

Thanks Yorky Bob much appreciated

Some interesting reading. I'm tempted to have a crack at it as I'm only looking at replacing the entire unit with a recon one. I'm certainly not up to rebuilding it myself however.

Hi Tigertim

After pulling up to park a few weeks ago and engaging reverse I heard a clunk. Everything appeared normal however until I realised that the front wheels would spin at a moments notice especially accelerating up a hill. The traction control was kicking in like never before. This recent bit of snow caught me out as the car wouldn't move on the tiniest bit of snow.

It drives normally except for excessive front wheel spin and there are no error codes. All terrain response programs engage but clearly don't do anything. Underneath the car today, mother rear drive shaft turns freely. My Indy told me straight away that it was the PTU.

I had a rotational noise that was diagnosed by Austen at Bell Engineering and my Independent LR mechanic that both said rear diff replacement. £800 later and still there... PTU replacement advised and £1,000 later the noise is still there.... Pulling my hair out!!!

Any ideas? Bearing Shaft CV joint?

Matt The Dog:

I've changed 2 rear diffs and 2 rear wheel bearings chasing rear-end rotational noises and on 1 of those 4 occasions I was correct (Rear Diff) the other 3 occasions the cause was tyres, tyres and tyres.....

So if you have not changed your tyres, or swapped them around to try to move the noise, then that should be your next step. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Pedro, Thanks for that.... 😢🤬🤪

I do hope this hasn’t been the most expensive tyre change ever in my life. I have Discovery AT M&S on all four corners replaced in the last 3 months... Gulp!

Still love my FL2
