With some trepdiation I took my beasty into LR today to leave it to have major surgery to the gearbox.

I was called short while later to tell me that the problem had been fixed.

Apparently when the car was pulled apart for its 36,000km service a few weeks ago something had came adrit in the transmission. When the car was opened up today so the mechanics could start work on it they found this loose part, reinstalled it and everything worked fine.

Aside from being annoyed that it's taken 3 trips back to Land Rover to solve the problem I'm pleased to have my car working properly again.

I dropped mine in at the dealers last week when I called to have a new key unit re coded. They did the gear shift lever at the same time, it took about 30mins so I cant imagine it was anything major.

i can move my auto gear lever from drive to N and the rest of the selections without
pressing the button, whilst moving. does this mean its faulty? 57 plate, hse stornoway grey with full bodykit, privacy glass, bi-xenon adaptive lights, clear indicators and colour coded door handles (sold now)

Yes, it should only move between drive and neutral without pressing the lever. To put it in R or P you should have to press the lever.

Mine was just like yours, its apparently only a minor adjustment to the lever mechanism.

If you can live with it then dont worry about it, I just had concerns that the lever might get knocked whilst moving one day.

i have just had this problem on my FL2 SE, went in for the PTC and service last week and then at 70mph went for 6th and went straight into reverse instead oooooppp, not a nice sound. Called landrover assistance tonite and the mechanic said its not safe to drive, so it on its way to the dealer, wait to see what they say and when i tell them i hit revers at 70mph........

just had a call from the dealership who had said the soilnoid is at fault and then have ordered a new one and will be fitting and roadtesting it tomorrow. I then pointed out to them that i want the gearbox fully checking for any damange that could have been caused at 70mph going into reverse. I did point out to them that they effectively returned me an unsafe vehnicle to drive after the service and ptc heater recal and that any damage that has been caused as a result of this will need to be made good. They are trying to state cause i informed them of this during the warranty (2 yrs old) that should there be problems in the future then it is logged that i have raised this issue.

still going to fight this with them though, as i dont see why i should have to have damanaged gearbox as a result of their incompetance or part failure.

You might want to point out the number of people on this forum (which lets face it is a pretty small sample of FL2 owners) that have had gear selection issues after the PTC recall work.

Is this the auto box you guys are talking about, I presume so as thats where the thread started,

Interesting, must check my auto, the button on the stick seemed to have a lot more resistance after the PTC recall.

So it should go between Drive & Neutral without the button but notthing else right

My problems started right after the 36,000 km service - before the Freelander had even left the dealer.

The guy who finally fixed mine suspected that the problem was caused by one of the people who performed the service not reassembling the components in the right way. He didn't have to replace any components just put the pieces in the right place!
