When I first thought of a canopy for my FL2, I took a piece of Awning 'C' section aluminium rail and bent in to match the contour of the roof. Not so difficult.

This shows the bend starting at the top of the A pillar, following the roof line, over the hip in the roof and along to the D Pillar.

This shows the open 'C' section aluminium rail bent to match the jiggling of the roof, looking from the tailgate down. Next time you look at your FL2 roof ......... its like an Olympic Luge Run

All bends were performed ........... over my knee ! The way master Craftsman would have done it years ago.

There will be a bit more to add to the whole roof rack set up. Just in the construction stage!

The sand flag mounting has been angled forward, would prefer it mounted further to the front but it is not easy on the Freelander, & the front mounting of the roof rails are not exactly stable!

New fuel tanks, only two x 5 litre, could have got two x 10 litre inside the rim but without a bracket, but I will see how this setup goes.

Finally devised a solution to clamp the sand tracks down. Made up a block of plastic to sit in the track channel & screw down with an oversized wingnut.

I have redesigned the wheel clamp to the LR cross bars as the cone clamp was not good with the additional fuel tank bracket. A 63mm diameter centre key & 2 additional keys in two of the wheel nut holes to stop the bracket from moving & or rotating, but I will have to put the wheel on the roof in the right rotational direction, not too difficult.

Next project, 120 watt custom folding solar panel from 6 x 20 watt Projecta solar panels (279 x 639 x 25mm thick) 6 at $42 each. I just did not like the over size & mainly wrong proportions of off the shelf folding solar panels & crap wiring, not forgetting the excessive price!

Still fine tuning mounting of parts, & having to get the awning to fit into the scheme of things.

Plenty of bolts to hold it all together. It looks a bit of a dog's breakfast but it's structurally sound so the extra weight of the sand tracks hanging off the back are supported.

The square sections hanging underneath to hold the sand tracks are at the same level as the LR roof rack cross brace.

Sorry that this thread is a bit off at a tangent, but even though the awning is installed, no tests to date other than how tight all the brackets & bolts work! There has been too many other issues to sort out, but the awning is still the main issue as mosquitoes & sand flies are a greater threat than the first world arms race!

A quick test with four of the six 20 watts panels (pre-wired for 6 panels), pulling 2 amps, not even pointed anywhere near the sun, hopefully will be 4 amps when actually facing the sun!

After a few more tests I will see if I need 6 panels, trying to avoid excess volume for Kimberly trip, water & fuel is the priority!

Control panel works well, plug & play so to speak! There are two 26 AH gel batteries under the passenger seat. The AH is a bit light but the fridge is so well insulated, & it is only for the fridge, not even lighting, plus the heavy cable everywhere for minimal power losses is about as good as it gets. Space is more valuable in the car, if the batteries get drained too much due to their small capacity & have a short life so be it, I will chuck them out & replace them.

Control panel has power from car while engine running, then I can switch to solar without unplugging. The panel will be mounted in the left side of the boot. The power cables double up for my compressors, as I only need to use them when I need to fix a flat tyre.

Bottom right: Battery
Black plug: Power from car
Red plug: Fridge power supply
Meter: Battery voltage
Meter: Amps from solar panels
