Thank you Jules. Note that at no point do I refer to it as an "oil". Always a "fluid". In this case an Auto Transmission Fluid or ATF. The name oil concentrates on the lubrication properties which is in this case a misnomer. A fluid can have many properties. Wink

Adywicasono,

I did do my most recent flush as described.

When you start the engine the fluid comes out very fast in about 10 or 15 seconds three liters will have been pumped out.

Then the pump will start pumping air and fluid and if you are not careful the hose will start making a mess.

Its difficult to do it without help. (I did it by myself)

If you have someone to turn off the engine then its very easy, just hold the hose down in the bucket and tell your friend to turn off the engine when the bubbles start.


One caution there are two hoses and they look identical if you remove the wrong hose then the fluid won't come out of the hose it will come out of the transmission where the hose was removed from. To mitigate this turn the engine on very briefly and confirm that the fluid is coming out of the hose and not the port in the transmission that you removed the hose from.

If you get it wrong it will be very obvious and it will make a big mess.

Thanks for sharing the link.

Its nice to see someone make their own tools.


For your wife's car:

One thing to keep in mind is the T55 Torx for filling the transmission is very tight.

To get access to it I removed my airfilter box and I was careful not to drop the fill plug into the engine bay.

Take a look at the first picture on this thread (Page 1, first picture) and you will see the T55

Reinstalling it is difficult as well, it is challenging to align the plug and to get it to catch the thread.



If you are going to make your own tool like the link you shared then you can fill by removing the other end of the return line (at the heat exchanger, blue box in the picture) and forcing the fluid back into the transmission.


The only reason that I did it the way that I did is because it is easier to remove the connection at the transmission.

I did it like this: FL2 07
hot engine, drain liquid approximately 3 liters, fill with Mobil atf 3309, 3 liters
disconnect lower pipe from the cooler, use a clear pipe and a container for dirty liquid, start the engine, move the lever for all positions 2 seconds, when container has 3 liters or bubbles,(15 seconds approximately) stop the engine. Fill again with 3 liters and repeat the operation.
check level at 60 Cº
I used 12 liters

Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of which hose I removed.

For anyone that is thinking about using this method only start the engine briefly to minimize the mess.

OK, going to do the dump & fill method as I'm not too sure about using Pauls flush method. My question is, how long do I wait between dumps & fills. I have 12 litres available, so do I do it once, drive it a few miles, do it again etc etc, or should I wait a day or two in between?

I, for one, make a dump and fill (3 liters) at each service (about 10,000 km).
You will see that after 4-5 services aprox. (50,000 km) the oil that exits from the box has just a slight change in color being almost as new.
This way will be much easy on the autobox and give it chance to adapt more easily to the new "oil mix" and you don't need to drop the adaptions.

Nick,

The first time that I changed my fluid I did the 3.2 quart removal and replace.

There is nothing wrong with doing it this way.

As always Alex’s approach is very reasonable and well considered.


The one advantage of the approach that I took is that you get more new fluid in the transmission faster

As for the time required for the new fluid to mix with the old it should only take a few minutes.

The transmission is pumping a lot of fluid.

As you say it gets pumped around pretty quick, so I think I will probably do several, one after the other, until I am reasonably happy with the colour.

So did 3 x dump & fills today, took it for a short drive & then adjusted fluid level, removed 350mm @60c.

The first dump fluid was darkish brown but had no burnt smell. I think the changes might be slightly smoother but it was not bad before either!
