TD4 Auto gearbox fluid flush

Hi Freel2 peeps...

Ive read most things re gearbox fluid change.... My 08 TD4 Auto has never had a gear fluid change in 75k,,,

Stratstones who looked after the Vehicle for the prior owners are useless and tell fibs re their service quality..ie... stamps advise they carried out a full service BUT only changed the engine oil!! The tick in the service book advises that air and pollen were changed,,, but after my inspection these items were very old! ok rant over....

Today I carried out a gearbox flush... every thing went well except I found it near impossible to remove the oil cooler connection!! you need to do this to enable your temporary flush pipe to connect from the cooler to the collection container...

Anyway, i just wanted to say that I found the connection(s) that are attached to the gearbox much easier to access. One screw attaches the cooler pipes to the bottom of the gearbox (front nearside corner).. Attach the flush pipe to this plastic stub and away you go!

Just to add :

its the lower pipe on the gearbox thats the return from the cooler...That way you flush the cooler during the process......

Gearbox flushing

Hi thanks for the post I found it quite interesting as I wasn't aware of a flushing product for auto boxes and would it be possible to add a pic or two to your post. Is flushing of the auto box something that should be done by the dealer during service at a given mileage ? What did you notice after carrying out this did it make any difference ? thanks Alan.

The general advise is to replace the gearbox fluid every 60k miles....

Sorry but may not have explained correctly,,,, I didnt flush using any flushing fluid, but used the correct 3309 fluid..

There seems to be 2 popular ways of achieving this...

1st Method) Drain the gearbox via the Drain/Level plug. (This usually drain approx 3 Ltrs of the 7 Ltrs held in the box) Then refill the exact amount.. Drive and repeat this again on another day. This method must be repeated at least 3 times to allow the fluid to become fully 'fresh'..

2nd Method) Carry out as above..(BUT ONLY THE 1ST DRAIN and REFILL)... Then remove the flow pipe from the cooler. Attach a temporary plastic pipe to this feed and place into a 5Ltr clear container (Marked with 1 Ltr graduations) Start the engine nd allow the gearbox pump to pump 'old' fluid into the catch container,,,STOP engine at 3 ltrs.... Fill box with 3 ltrs of new fluid... and then repeat engine run to pump out a further 3 Ltrs..........Repeat again for a 3rd time... 9 Ltrs should now have 'flushed through the box..

I very much doubt that a LR Dealership would offer a gearbox flush/fluid change...BUT a quality Auto Gearbox Repair Company will.... They have a machine similar to a Dialysis machine that achieves No2 in one operation....

Sorry I didnt take any pics but Have a read of this post by VALHALLA...

and Youtube has several examples if you search for "Volvo aisin automatic transmission" These will give you the general idea....

No filter or gasket... Just 'o' rings on level plug and cooler fitting into gearbox...

The gearbox contains a fine mesh filter that's sadly not a service item...

My discussions with Mackies (gearbox specialists) of Glasgow regarding servicing the Aisin gearbox is that it should be done every 40- 50k and that the gauze filter would be changed as part of their service. My position is that if there is a filter then it must have been part of the system design to remove stuff which affects the proper lubrication of the gearbox and therefore it needs to be changed. Mackies agree with this. 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto - Stornoway Grey - Hers (His, really)

I thought the gearbox had to come out to change the filter?

No, it was my mistake not Mackies. I had been talking about the ZF gearbox on my other car to them at the same time and confused the two. The gauze filter in the Aisin gearbox is backflushed. Apologies for the confusion. 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto - Stornoway Grey - Hers (His, really)

When i have booked it in and got it done in the next few weeks, I'll ask and let you know. I know that they have a piece of kit (commonly referred to on my other cars forum as the "sucky, pumpy, squirty thing") which is used in servicing ZF gear boxes. They are usually very accommodating and happy to show clients about so i'll report back. 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto - Stornoway Grey - Hers (His, really)

Ok thanks for that.....

I dare say that the process is the opposite to what I did....They'll attach their sucky, pumpy, thimajig to the oil cooler feed pipes and pump fresh oil back through the pump via the outlet connection in the box through to the pump then the screen and into the gearbox, whilst the old fluid gets suckied through the cooler return connection in the box....

Thanks again....
