technically you do not OWN your car....the DVLA does. You sign away your lawful ownership to them when you fill out the form and what do they give you back???????...........'Registered Keeper' .....thats 'Keeper' NOT OWNER. Because in COMMON LAW you have the absolute right to Property, but under Statute you do not. Especially when you give your ownership away voluntarily.

I would have thought you could be the Keeper without being the owner. Whoever buys it is the owner, I would expect. So if you buy one on finance the finance company own it until loan paid off, then it is yours.

I agree that "Registered keeper" and "owner" are two separate things and may not necessarily be the same legal entity, but to say the DVLA owns my car is wrong.

During the purchase of my car there was invitation to treat, offer, acceptance and payment. Ownership transferred to me.

Who I then ELECT to have nominated as the registered keeper is a matter for me and me alone - irrespective of who that is, ownership rests with me.

If the OP statement were true, then it would mean no High Court Enforcement Officer could seize any vehicle for the recovery of debt as it would mean every vehicle belongs to the DVLA. Clearly not true.

Equally, it would mean every vehicle leasing company in the land is immediately insolvent as they have purchased hundreds of thousands of cars but have no assets to show for it. Clearly not true.

Others have responded to the nonsense already but just as an interesting add on, did you know that if you take your car to a garage for a repair, agree for work to be done for £x then decide to take your car back without paying, you have stolen the car? The victim being the garage even though it is your car.

I thought this was going to be a thread about, 'I bought it, the other half has adopted it'.

In may case, I had to sell my impreza and I was lumbered with it as the missus brought a new car. Don't get me wrong, it is a great car and I like it a lot, but when it does eventually get replaced, it won't really be missed, but cars we miss is a separate subject all together...
