Learning Welsh

I'm off to begin Welsh language classes tomorrow Big Cry .
Has any native English speakers on this forum done the same in the past and to what degree of success?
Or failure Whistle Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I was at a school last week, the School Secretary was was having a long conversation with the Caretaker over a Two Way Radio, all in an East European dialect, so much for the welsh language in Cardiff. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Almost all the locals in this part of Wales are bilingual although Welsh is predominately their first language. They seemed pleased when I mentioned my desire to learn and are keen to help me with pronunciation.
It's rather different living here then just visiting.

After 4 years of learning, my German was good enough to hold a conversation of sorts, albeit slowly.
I'm hoping for a similar result or even better Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Good luck to you Pegleg, it's good to see you trying to fit in where you live. So many "little Englanders" bemoan the fact that in the UK we have lots of immigrants not attempting to integrate, whilst they themselves stubbornly refuse, wherever they are, to speak anything but English. Mind you, most of them can't even write or spell English correctly so maybe it's understandable!

It amazed me as a child, being brought up less than half-an-hour's drive from Wales, that we were taught French or German in school. No wonder the Welsh Nationalists have such a low opinion of the English.

More power to you, keep it up and I wish you every success. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Thank you Thumbs Up

I take the view that if I walked into a bar in say Germany, I wouldn't expect them all to break into English just for my benefit.
That's what happens here; fair do's to the locals, they speak English when I'm around. But I want to make that extra effort.
I've found the so called 'Nationalists' take an entirely different view of those who really do try to fit in. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Just human nature really. We want people in England to speak English, therefore............

The first time we went to France we were on a campsite in the Jura mountains with no camp shop. The local village was just over the bridge from the campsite and it was virtually entirely French-speaking. We had to make the effort and everyone was so friendly when we tried, albeit with a lot of hand-waving and embarrassed laughter from us Whistle

Mind you, I draw the line at speaking Yorkshire................. Thumbs Up They can switch to English Rolling with laughter Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Hardly surprising is it?
Don't think you could land a job in NZ if you couldn't speak English. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

England

20 odd years ago as an engineer repairing dental equipment, I was dispatched to a job in Pwhellwhi (?) walked into the health centre and waited patiently in the queue for reception.
A young lady with a pram was struggling with the door " here, let me get that" I said, I then noticed a distinct change, everyone started to speak in Welsh, I promptly walked out and waited for about an hour before going back in, matched to reception and told them I was here to fix the fault, waiting full of folk waiting glaring at me, walked out with a huge grin on my face and into a rollicking from the boss who had been told what I had done.

If the Welsh want their own language then maybe they should get making their own words for television, radio, computer etc, instead of pinching ours, nothing worse than tuning in to hear " Clicky Clicky ugh dith radio two" Laughing

That's what I find funny, listening to Chris Moyles and his welsh mate would speak his native tongue but kept dropping in English words Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Just got back from my first lesson with my head swimming Big Cry
But it's always been the same with any other language I've learnt.
This is going to be difficult; when young we had to learn to speak Latin at school. This helps greatly with learning most European languages although I didn't realise it at the time.
Nothing Latin based in Welsh Big Cry
I'm going again next week though Thumbs Up
