2007 Freelander 2 Rear Parking Sensor Problem

My 57 plate Freelander 2 GS has developed a problem with it's rear parking sensors no longer working.

Most of the time now when I put the car in reverse I get no beep at all.

Occasionally I get a longish beep but even then the sensors do not work even when something is directly behind me.

Having looked at previous posts I can see that sometimes this can be the result of one of the sensors failing.

Is this how the system works that if one goes then they don't work at all?

Just can explain why I only get the beep randomly.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Martin

has it been raining?

the sensors are extremely bad at coping with unorthodox weather such as rain in England...

They have more or less not been working for the last 2 months, in which time its rained, snowed and been sunny.

Would a large amount of rain stop them working forever or just temporarily?

Thanks

Martin

Are your reversing lights working? If not it could be the reverse switch on the gear change rather than the reversing sensors themselves. Mine occasionally fails to turn on either reversing lights or sensors - a nudge on the gearstick usually sorts it.

The sensors are so bad that everytime it rained mine would stop or stay on. Cured this by Halfords silicone spray, now everytime I wash it I go around after and spray loads on all the sensors and sinse it has been good as gold. On the back its really easy to lay down under the bumper and remove all the sensors and to get to the wiring plug, which is on the drivers side up in the bumper Thumbs Up

If you can get them to at least work for alittle bit, the easy way to test if they are working is to put in reverse and then listen to the sensors one by one and if you hear a ticking sound coming from the sensor then you know it should be working ( you need to put your ear really close ) Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

So I can remove and replace the sensors without taking off the bumper?

Thanks

Martin

Hi guys, I fixed my reversing sensors today. Exactly the same symptoms as the OP, sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't. Recently they had stopped completely.

I bought a new (genuine) replacement and started at one side, removing and replacing them with the known good one until the system worked again.

The two outer ones can be easily reached without removing anything. They are held in by small clips top and bottom of the sensor. I found that if I gently pushed the clip apart, whilst pressing the sensor from outside, it comes away really easily. The two middle sensors require the tow ball to be moved out of the way. I removed the lower bolt(the one nearest the ball) and loosened the other one. This allowed me to swing the ball downwards, along with the trailer sockets. I then went underneath the bumper and removed the four equally spaced Phillips head screws which are screwed up in from below. This allowed me to get my arm up in to work at the middle two sensors.

A nice easy job to do, and I've got my parking sensors in operation again. Smile

Jon.
