AGM battery swap

Has anybody with a TD4.e replaced their AGM battery? I'm looking at doing mine. Ive looked in the ebay manual I have and it says the Battery monitoring system requires resetting BUT if suitable diagnostic equipment is not available then the system will reset it self but might take 48 hours to do it.

I went to my indy that I use and he said the system would need resetting and would cost half an hours labour to do so. Local battery place looked at it and said it was a straight swap. If its just a straight swap for a same spec battery then I can do it myself.

So I was just wondering if anyone has swapped one themselves and the car has been fine? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

If a new battery is fitted to the vehicle, the BMS (battery monitoring system) module will require recalibrating to register the greater charge holding capacity of the battery, this is performed using Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment.

If diagnostic equipment is not available the BMS module will recalibrate automatically however, this could take 48 hours to
complete depending on vehicle usage. The Stop/Start system will not function correctly until the BMS module is
recalibrated.

A cut and paste from Landrovers manual, its a case of swapping yourself and letting the 'BMS' calibrate itself. You may have to reset your windows afterwards and that's all.

That was my take on it, swap battery, reset windows and maybe clock. Just wondered if anyone else had changed an AGM battery without any issues. My Indy wanted to charge 30 quid to fit battery and reset the system and whilst I don't mind paying if it is needed, I would be anouyed if I paid extra and I didn't need the system reset. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

No issues on mine when I changed battery earlier in the year (MY2010). I don't think I did anything to the windows, just had to reset the clock.

Why not try a Ctek recondition?

I've got a Ctek charger but it only charges the battery for about half an hour then says it's fully charged. I don't think you can recondition an AGM. I had the battery tested at a battery place and it was 60% charged. With the battery being over 4 years old I'm planning to change it. I didn't use my car for a couple of days this week and when I went to use it the engine was slower at cranking.

Thanks for your answer Tim Thumbs Up I'll get a battery ordered and change it myself. I don't want to risk being caught out this winter. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

AGM (Absorbed glass mat)
AGM batteries differ from flooded lead acid batteries in that the electrolyte is held in the glass mats, as opposed to freely flooding the plates. Very thin glass fibers are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough to hold sufficient electrolyte on the cells for their lifetime. The fibers that compose the fine glass mat do not absorb nor are they affected by the acidic electrolyte. These mats are wrung out 2–5% after being soaked in acids, prior to manufacture completion and sealing.

The plates in an AGM battery may be any shape. Some are flat, others are bent or rolled. AGM batteries, both deep cycle and starting, are built in a rectangular case to BCI battery code specifications.

Should have worked, but if the battery is really gone, then it can't resurrect it.

The CTeK will recondition,

This one will do an AGM battery, but shop around, prices vary from £59 to £99.
Also if you have a 13 Pin connector for use when towing you can buy the adapter from Martin on Disco3.com and charge it without lifting the bonnet.

Ive got a Ctek 5. Ill try a recondition charge tomorrow. The instructions to me are a little confusing.

First page says reconditioned charge is for wet or Ca/Ca batteries.

Then next page

This shows the various options you can choose for charging, one of which is a AGM reconditioned charge. I will try it tomorrow and see how I get on. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Hi Dorsetfreelander. Just a word of warning. The AGM batteries are fitted to stop-start models. You cannot interchange them with a normal battery, as the charging setup is different and would have to be reset by a dealer. This might be what the garage was thinking of when it wanted to charge for resetting.
Note to everyone - keep an eye on Eurocarparts. They often have good deals on batteries. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Well I've done an AGM recondition charge this morning in the warehouse at work. Took about 2.5 hours to do. After the charging was complete I tested the battery with a volt meter, it measured 12.9 volts. When I measured the voltage last week it was around 12.4

Car started quicker as well. I'll hold off getting a new battery for a couple of weeks and i'll measure the voltage a few times to see have the battery is coping. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Well finally got round to fitting a new battery today. 15 minutes to swap to battery over, no real issues just found it awkward getting the battery out. Any how, the stop/start worked as soon as the car was warmed up, it hasn't worked for ages. So I take it from the LR manual that the BMS module has been re-calibrated. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
