Air Con Smell

Only had my new Freelander 2 for a couple of weeks and I am getting a "Fishy smell" from the air con when i first start the car up, it seems to go after a couple of minutes. I understand this can be be a build up of bacteria in the air con, is this possible on such a new vehicle?

Is there a quick way to overcome the problem, I have run the air con on full blast cold for ten minutes and then max hot for ten minutes to see if it will cure it.

Also my air con does not seem to drip under the car. Can any body tell me if it should drip and after how long running the vehicle with the air con on. Just been out for 45 minutes with the air con on and still no drip! Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto with Winter Pack, Stornaway Grey, Ebony, Grey Mirror Caps. Removable towbar with 13 pin Electrics

Have a look here

http://autocar-mix.blogspot.com/2007/11/so...blems.html

As they say if the car,s air cond has not been used for some time bacteria might develop

Also you can have a look here if you want to know more about how air conditioning is working. The auto air cond is for a SAAB but I would guess the system on the FL2 would be sort of similar

http://www.dervman.com/kaaircon.htm

I would also say you should contact the dealers and see what they about this as bacteria could be dangerous. If they don't know or don't have time maybe see a specialist and send them the bill. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

air con drip

Thanks for the info Matei.

I would also like feedback from members on the amount of drip from the air con as i have not noticed any yet on my freelander2.

Does anybody know where to look underneath, or where the pipe is?? Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto with Winter Pack, Stornaway Grey, Ebony, Grey Mirror Caps. Removable towbar with 13 pin Electrics

Some years ago I had jeep Cherokee Sport with the simple air conditioning and it was not dripping all the time. As technology evolved I thought that maybe there is no reason for dripping anymore. It seems this is not the case http://www.familycar.com/Classroom/ac1.htm
as even evolved systems should dripp.
I guess thedripping appears only while the system is cooling so maybe while you tried your system it just was not warm enough as I also assume there is some sortof storage container and the liquide is only expelled from time to time. I have not noticed any drippings under mine but have not looked especcialy for this. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

Thanks Matei, perhaps i am looking for a problem that doesn't exist. I used to own a Sorento which seemed to make puddles from the air con all the time maybe the Frellander 2 is a bit more refined. Think I will wait to see if any other problems arise, someone suggested I would expect wet carpets if the tube from the air con was blocked, lets hope that doesn't happen.

I get drips from the aircon, I'd guess it is most days that it appears, but then again, I never turn it off, so to be expected.

I thyought it was condensation build on the compressor, or something like that, not liquid from the system, I thought they were sealed, and presurised systems.

Its the humidity in the outside air, when you lower airs temperature it cant hold as much water so the extra water condenses in your AC air box. A lot of this freezes onto the condensers in the system, some drips out.
when you park, up the ice on the condenser melts so car will drip more. If the car isn't dripping after extended use of the AC then it is possible the drain tube is blocked. the water build up caused my this block may explain any bad smells.
The drip will therefore be much less on a hot dry day than a hot humid day At work

It should be the liquide separeted from the gas in the compressor. as the compressor is used to compress gasses and not liquides- liquides can hardly be compreesed and any liquides in the compreesed air will damage a compressor..
Liquide from the system should drain only if the system is not used (damaged seals y not beeing lubrificated)or there is a leak
It shoud work like a home air conditioner. In the home air conditioners the time between freon - or whatever- the cooloing fluid is , should be bigger as the system is not in motion but in cars- especially off-roading ones the system will probably have to be checked on a yearly basis. It all comes down to craftmanship and sheer luck as the Jeep I owned some years ago did nothave the air conditioning system checked for five years and it worked just fine. I can only assume that the air conditioning on the FL2 is as good. Normally from my experience with cars with air conditioning the problems ususlly are in the air conditioning cooler with microscopic holes which loose coolant fluid. Never experienced them but had a friend who did and after numerous trips to the dealer the cure was a new air coditioning radiator.(this was a Mercedes)
As I have been advised as the air conditioning is not using that much fuel the system really should be used all the time especially in modern cars where the system will be mostly off or on low if not required. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER
