Ok,

Since I originally posted this subject things have developed a bit. The whine has developed into a grinding noise and has appeared in 2nd and 1st gears as well as 5th and 6th. 3rd and 4th no noise at all.

Went into the garage this morning and they reported that a bearing has gone on the gearbox and will take a week at least to fix. I presume there must be a shaft that is common to 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th which isn't used for 3rd or 4th.
The jeep has done 156000 kms. Luckily this will be covered on warranty.

When I had the vehicle inspected before buying there was a small oil leak from the bottom of the engine at the gearbox end. The LR garage that did the inspection commented that the leak was small and was normal for a FL2 of this mileage.
Question: while they have the gearbox out does it make sense to get them to replace the crankshaft oil seal at the same time?

Regards

Chris

Yes, I would change the seal. I would also give the clutch and DMF a good hard look as well. The cost of a clutch change is mainly the labour cost so it makes sense. John

Good point.

I'll ask them to have a look at the clutch and DMF. I wonder what the cost would be for the clutch/DMF and oil seal replacement assuming that the labour associated with getting at them will be covered under the warranty repair for the gearbox?

Regards

Chris

To report on the outcome of this;

Reconditioned gearbox fitted by garage under warrany. Bearings/shaft damaged beyond repair according to mechanic.
Clutch and dmf reported ok.
Garage reported that there was no oil leak from end of cranshaft when gearbox removed.

Regards

Chris
