what p****d me off when i bought my FL2 last Oct from Guy Salmon was that i specifically asked salesman"will it be serviced before i buy it" and he said yes, what he meant was that it had been serviced 6 months ago, and not just before i bought it. So imagine my surprise when after owning the car for 6 months i find out it needs a service.
Every other garage i have bought cars from either service them beforehand or or upfront about when it needs a service.

They have agreed to knock 50% off the cost due to another issue but i'll take it else where in future. I think some of the more rural independantly owned LR dealers might provide a better service VULCAN XH558 - Cold war warrior lives on !

That's an issue with all the big dealer groups. I have dealt with the same LR dealer for 12 years. Their premises are surrounded by fields and they are as interested in the famer/contractor with their defenders as the plutocrat with the FFRRs and everyone between. They drive a good deal for themselves, but want you back so don't take the pi55. Much better to deal with this kind of dealer than the slick urban ones who don't care once you've bought the car.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Every person who works for Strathearn Engineering owns a Land Rover, and has a great passion for the brand. From the (female) accountant who owns a Series 3, to the apprentice with a 300tdi Defender

It's a Land Rover thing, you can't really explain it! And I imagine most independent specialists, regardless of the brand would be the same


Apologies SE for not mentioning you in my reply you are a site sponser and just down the A9 from me Embarassed your right about all the indie specialists, I had an old Citroen and that was serviced by a indie and I remember once I had to wait to get my car back because he was cleaning up the sump! while it was a lovely old car it certainly wasn't concourse standard. Haggled with Stratstone and got 1st service on a SD4 auto it for £299, and they used the correct oil, shown on paperwork as Castrol Prof C. I agree its a lot of money for what is essentially an oil change.

2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Lago Grey

I have had two services on my 2011 my FL2.

The 15,000 mile was at the dealer who I bought it from...£296.79 ( and they used the wrong spec oil. They used the 913B "old" spec. Castrol Magnatec)

The 30,000 mile service has been completed at an independent specialist using genuine LR parts ( all filters replaced including fuel filter) and the correct spec oil ( Shell Helix ALF5W-30) for £334.38.

The labour charge for the 15,000 mile service was £163.80 plus vat whereas the 30,000 mile labour was £120 plus vat. Given the additional work at the 30,000 mile service I reckon this represents good value.

They completed the official LR work sheet as evidence of what had been done, service book stamped etc.

Needless to say, I won't be crossing the threshold of the dealer for service work again!

Just had a oil and filter change at my local garage charged me £30 i supplied oil and filter..got sick of paying £400 per service when i have only done less than 5k a year in the lr from new..milage is 23k and 57 plate

150K Service - phew!

I already posted this a while back but felt that it would help here ....

With gritted teeth I went into my local LR dealership and asked for a quote on a 150K service - needless to say I had a lie down in a darkened room to recover from the shock - it ran into four figures!

Considering my options I downloaded the Maintenance check sheet and decided to do as much of the service as I was comfortable with and ticked off as many of the items as possible - I am fine doing brakes, filters, top ups and checks. After doing a complete brake disc & pads replacement (including handbrake shoes), changing all filters and generally doing most of a 'normal' service it came to the tricky stuff - cambelt, auxiliary belt, diff oil change, auto box oil change etc etc. This is when I went back to LR for some expert help and entrusted the work to someone who has the right tools and experience for the job.

The whole experience was surprisingly pleasant and after dropping off my GS auto I was given a MY11 GS auto courtesy car - even in the same colour! I must say that having driven the year old car (only 3K on the clock) around for a day I was surprised to find that there wasn't really that much difference between the two! Apart from feeling a little bit 'tighter' in the steering & suspension my old 150K Landy actually felt smoother in some respects, especially the auto box. I also noticed that the fuel consumption was identical too.

Returning the next day to collect my car, I was presented with a (not so hefty) £500 bill which basically completed the 150K service and the service dept had stamped my service book to reflect this. During the course of their usual 'health check' the mechanic said that he was surprised to find that no extra maintenance was required - he couldn't find anything else to fix!

So those of you with high mileage FL2s can rest assured that they are pretty resilient when used sensibly and apart from basic servicing, just require a little bit of common sense to keep going and wont cost an arm and three legs when it comes to servicing. Cheers,
