Could also be a bad earth lead from the battery negative terminal to the chassis. Next time try using a jump lead from the battery negative terminal to somewhere on the chassis to see if that helps.

Mine was apparently fixed by Hunters in Guilford. At least I have a copy of the invoice from them that they gave my dealer. 2007 FL2 HSE i6 - Stornaway Grey, a touch a refinement in a land of oil burners - now where is the nearest petrol station?

This has happened to me on many other vehicles(used to be a mechanic).

Yep, happened to me too on my RR Classic. Was very intermittent, about 1 failure every 5 starts, and took me over a year to diagnose. Finally discovered it by putting putting a jump lead between neg terminal and engine and got 20 out of 20 starts !! Put on an extra earth strap and problem never recurred.

This problem is now happening with my 57 SE Auto diesel. Happens after long runs, short runs, anytime. Today was the worst took many button pushes to start. There is a loud click - from the starter motor? - all the instuments come on but nothing else happens. I sometimes get a single wiper sweep as mentioned in another thread. Also the brake pedal stiffins up so it is difficult to put the pedal all the way down. Has anybody come up with a solution to this problem before I have to buy a new starter motor which may or may noy be the cause.

Apart from the above my Freelander 2 is still magnificent.

I got the software upgrade 1 week ago and my FL2 has started first time ever since. Hoping it lasts. The car seems to be running smoother too, even SWMBO said so (so it must be right). The lady at my Land Rover dealer said "we only do the software upgrade when people complain that their car isnt starting, its not an automatic upgrade. I reckon they wait until the warrenty lapses so that they can charge you £104.00 for the upgrade.
Will keep you updated but so far so good

Sad So the software upgrade didn't work, I'm back to the not starting thing. Must be the starter motor - poverty here I come.

Have you tried the extra earth strap tip?

I agree you should consider a heavy duty earth strap as its a very cheap option and can cure many issues and the extra earth strap is now fitted on later models as standard and LR wouldn't of done it unless there was a weakness the is the first place. Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone
Freelander 2 GS auto 2008 most unreliable ever ! gladly gone
Freelander 2 GS manual 2013 only time will tell !

Most vehicles used to be designed with an additional earth strap.
It was considered a safety issue. If one became loose or heavily corroded, the vehicle would still run.
Dangerous to have engine power failure; particularly on mways. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Thanks for that guys. But I'm useless at mechanical things and I don't know anybody who is. When I read about the earth strap my mind went blank. Is this something my LR dealer would know about or could I take it to Quick Fit and plead honest ignorance?

I know, real men should be good at this stuff but I have even cut my hand on a fairy liquid bottle and don't even mention Ikea! Embarassed

Hi, was yours a non starting issue where u slot in the RC, step on the brake pedal, push the start button, and about 3sec later, nothing happened, no fault message, just nothing?

If so, what exactly was done to resolve this?
