United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Orkney Grey

My MPG ( according to the computer) seems to be lower recently than it has been in former times. I used to get it up to ~ 40-42 mpg on my way to work ( it always got better at the end of journey since there's a 5 mile stretch of motorway that moves a bit better and its downhill). I now seem to be getting 35 mpg max on same journey and today I didn't even get to 30 mpg. Maybe because its cold or some DPF regen was going on today ? Not due for a service for ~ 8 months so just wondered about the increase in consumption

It`s normal when the temp outside is cold for there to be a noticeable drop in MPG. That is what i have found over the last few years anyway with various different diesel vehicles. That 44mpg in the summer months drops to around 35 or so and 70MPG dropped to about 62MPG. A diesel engine is very inefficient when it is cold and it takes a long time to get up to operating temp at this time of year.

Posted a reply on another thread...

But I get 30 around town if I take it easy (25 otherwise!)
33-35 tops on a run. I can get high 30's if I keep it sensible.

2008 TD4 Auto HSE 88k... lot less than xxpected but with 88k on the clock I suppose its not too bad.
Thumbs Up

Also I did a tank to tank test and found that my MPG on the computer was about 2 mpg lower than actual over a 1,200 mile round trip from Scotland to Berkshire and back, I don't believe there is a way of resetting it.
So I suspect nearer to 34-36mpg on a run.
Range runs out to less than 10miles before the low warning light comes on just below 1/4 tank???

"Oh and... I changed to a premium 'air filter' before we cam back up, and got 1.5mpg more" worth making sure it is kept clean?

New 2010 FL 2 TD4e manual owner here and shocked by the poor mpg after coming from a 2.5 Navara!

FL2 giving late 20's mpg navara with was giving 35+!

Just dumped some redex in tank and given the MAF a clean hoping I can improve mpg

Doing a tank test at moment as not sure I trust computer as surely it can be that bad!! Big Cry

You can't really do a tank to tank test, as 1) it never fully empties, and 2) you can never fully fill it.

Best method would be to brim it as best you can, drive 100 miles, brim it again and divide litres consumed by mileage. That'll give you a better idea than the lie-o-meter built in to the vehicle.

Basically what I did.
Filled to neck ran for 400 miles,
And repeated 2 times and took an average over 1200 miles all different roads, 75% motorway.
Used miles from sat nav and Google maps to get right miles.

Found cars sat nav was 15 miles more than odometer in speedo?

Avg on computer 31.8, actual 33.6mpg.......
Avg speed 50mph

I should have though of this before but mine came with 20" Evoque alloys fitted, So this would put speedo out and in turn mpg would be reading wrong due to bigger diameter? anyone know how much out it will be

You would need to work it out for the tyres that are fitted - the 20 inch alloys presumably have a rubber-band tyre, so the overall circumference (and vehicle height) might not be that far off the original. My FL2 is the same model as yours and it sits around 39mpg on the dash in winter and 40ish in summer. True mpg (calculated over a long-term period) is only 1 or 2 mpg below dash figure. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

As far as I can see, you should be about 7 or 8% out. So to be comparable to my FL2, you should be reading about 34mpg. Since you seem to be way below this, then there is either something wrong with the car, your use is very different, or you have a very different driving style!

Granny...suck-eggs and so on but I guess you’ve checked that none of the wheels is a tad warm after a journey? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Mine still not as good as it used to be on the computer, even in warmer weather.

Can just about get it up to 35 mpg to work, whereas in the past low 40's have been possible regularly.

This may help to compare rolling circumferences

Can a new clutch increase fuel consumption ?. Mine seems to be consistently lower MPG than it use to be before new clutch, according to on board computer. The clutch works fine
