Hello Richp I'm just talking about the throttle body, if I disconnect the connector and try to turn off the engine, the engine stops smoothly even with the throttle body off ..............no problem..........

Interesting, now I am confused as I thought the purpose of the throttle body was to regulate air flow to the engine and when you turn the engine off the throttle body would cut all air (oxygen) to the engine. What am I missing?

No Rich throttle body only serves to turn off the engine, do not rule no d 'air flow, try and see, ...... off the connector and then see how it goes.............

I don't have any issues with the car as I replaced my throttle body a month or so ago, just trying to understand it correctly, which I don't yet. If you disconnect the control and remove the flap, you don't have any control over the air intake so how does the engine still shut down? Anyone?

I have a loud rattle on shutdown and a kind of "pshh" but only one out of three of four times ... sometimes it's quiet and smooth on shotdown. Any idea ?

joined the "club" of the Throttle Body this weekend.

The car starts well but "reduced engine performance" message on the dash but NO MIL and at OBD scan, only the P02e8 appears.

Great shacking when the engine is switched off and no more typical high pitched sound.

SO: take my toolbox, put off the throttle body, removed the gears cover and....

the gears room was FULL of oil Shocked Shocked ....I removed almost 3-4 spoons of old, black nasty motoroil from the gears room: cleaned all as possible and notice that the "half-gear" was broken.

( the TB in the picture is not mine, taked from the web to show where the "half-gear" failed)

A little chip ( not much greather than a grain of rice) of the "half-gear" was interfering with the correct butterfly movement: removed the fragment, reassembled the TB and now the car runs sweetly as usual.

all the gears theet was in perfect conditions after 144.000 km.

so TB failures are not only due to theet consumption Smile

It's a pity that we can't find the manufacturers of the throttle body/plastic gears and order a load of gears which could be sold on the forum. They are probably only a few pence each from the supplier. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I forgot to check the gears and see if there's some manufacturers markings...anyway, my FL2 is under warranty and the dealer will change my TB without costs.

If I can have the old one, I will disassemble it and report to the forum about manufacturers markings on the gears ( if there's) Smile

Hi Sergio977, I would like to inspect my throttle body gears.

I removed throttle body a few weeks ago to check the hoses from intercooler. I checked to see if the flap inside moved smoothly which it did apart from once when it would not return to normal. Just stuck half way. Tried again and then returned to normal. I could not get to stick again after many attempts. So fitted back in car. I have not had any problems since. However, I am now wondering if there may have been something jamming the gears that I had dislodged.

Can I ask if cover comes of easily and can be replaced easily. I don't want to damage the throttle body. Although I am tempted to buy a new one anyway just to future proof.

hi JGH99, YES, the same happened to mine: tried several time to manually move the butterfly and rarely she get stuck at half way.

So I've double checked, and I see the fragment of the plastic gear inside....after a good-strong shake I was able to put it out Smile

I'm afraid that your TB have the same problem of mine: anyway if the fragment drops in a "secure zone" inside the cover, I think you'll never notice any problem.

The cover comes off very easily: I used a little flat screwdiver to bend up the clips. Please pay attention to not excessively bend up the clips: they're made of unknown cheap metal so there's possibility to brake them once you re-bend to close the cover. ( hope you've understood...for my poor english this operation is more difficult to write, than to do it Laughing )

Thanks for reply. No need to apologise for your English I understand perfectly. It does not sound too difficult just have to be gentle with the clips.

I will take a look before just replacing whole unit. But if the gear teeth are starting to wear and oil is starting to pass through the shaft seal it might be time to replace anyway.

Thanks again, JGH99. Freelander 2 GS Stornoway Grey

So I finally got around to fixing the throttle body, and as you can see it was knackered.

To get access, I took of the MAP sensor...BIG mistake! In putting it back on I was a bit heavy-handed and snapped the plastic lug. Argh!!! If you look at the photo, the lug should be twice as long.

Who'd have thought a genuine MAP sensor would be £80?!?!

Luckily eurocarparts (just up the road) had one non-genuine part (£40) and the car is now back on the road, but I was gobsmacked at £80!!

RAC call out yesterday for this - seems the valve was stuck - drawing in loads of air when trying to start - but obviously didn't!
A tap with the back of a screwdriver when cranking over - it burst into life! Obviously the start of it's problem I fear.
Vehicle runs fine, no other symptoms.
I'm keeping a small hammer in the car and look to replace the throttle body.
Huge thanks to those on this thread for information, as RAC guy read out the codes to me PO2E5 "Diesel Air Intake Air Flow Control", I read on this forum and 'fixed' without need for recovery on lowloader. Thumbs Up Previous Series III, Defender, Discovery 300 and TD5 owner.

It should be open when trying to start, there is no such thing as controlling the air or any in between stage, it is either open or closed. Stop engine it closes, start engine it opens.
