This is a feature of many Ford (or ex Ford) group cars, Ford, Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar etc. VW group cars do it, too. Probably others too...

I can't say I have experienced what you describe. I never have any idea what gear it is in - it always finds the right one though. Mine seems to favour a gear that means the engine is at about 1800 ...

There is a sub-woofer in the XS (at least in my MY11). If I have got this right there are 10 speakers in total. The 14 speaker set-up in the HSE adds 2x rear pillar and 2x more rear doors?

My '04 plate facelifted BMW engined TD4 auto was fault-free for 35,000 miles, when I traded it in.

It is one of a very select band of fault-free cars I have owned. My SD4 is not on that list.

Mine's now been upgraded. You will be in no doubt if this happens to you; limp mode is not slightly reduced performance, it is absolutely crippled.
