Relative poverty restricted me to a 1995 Volvo 440 and before that a whole series of "bangers" which cost so little to buy and run.

The FL2 is the nicest and best car I've ever had.

If you leave the Thule bars on for long enough there is always a degree of chaffing where the feet meet the body work. The rubber pads leave a mark too but that can usually be buffed out.

It may not be within your possibilities. But given the nature of your "sudden" failure it way be down to a "dry solder joint" or cracked solder joint on the circuit board of the EC ...
