Given that the high speed CAN bus can be picked up as two wires all over the car, I don't think a lock on the OBD2 connection will slow someone down if they've decided to take your car.

Thanks Cambo, clearly the the same issue. From that description I found the LR version as LTB00818. Interestingly it doesn't mention the Freelander2.

Well it's back from the dealer today and the crackle has gone.

The dealer has updated the software to fix it, but interestingly I couldn't find anything on topic for it.
