| I've often wondered this too - ironically, nowadays the si4 engine would make a lot more sense for the FL2 as presumably it would be both Euro 6 and ULEZ emissions zone compliant? |

No real difference in reliability or mpg between the td4 and sd4 auto. Most in here will agree (I think) that the superior torque curve of the sd4 is a benefit when towing or offroading.
