So, where part 9600 meets 9652A, unless that connection for those 2 items is sealed and watertight then thats where the water will get in regardless of how much higher the side vent is Exclamation ______________________

There are rubber seals and provided you keep a good bow wave and don't stop you'll get an air pocket. Ok you might get a few splashes but land rover specifically routed it to the wing as just behind the wheel is the low point of water when going steady. Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

If you wanted to lessen the chances of water getting in what should you do? (apart from fitting a snorkel which you cant get Evil or Very Mad )
As 9652A is a weak point would using silicon on both ends help, are there any other areas that would benefit from a quick bit of DIY.

As Ed says speed is king, dont stop what ever you do, equally important is to keep the engine revs up a bit. this prevents sucking water up the exhaust. so drive slowly with plenty of revs, then remember that flooded roads can sometimes be washed out so drive slowly and carefully ready to quickly select reverse without loosing engine revs should the front wheels feel like they are dropping in a hole.
In case you need to hurriedly reverse make sure nobody is following you.

All of the above is practiced by many people each times it floods on a short stretch of road a mile away from me. approaching the only local bridge crossing the river.

The local garage calls this the happy time as they earn £1,000s repairing all the car engines, especially so in the years when the road washes out.

Its amazing how many people try and drive through even when there are other cars dead in the water.

Recently Mrs G used the fl2 as a ferry thru the floods to help out few stranded people, I told her not to do it again, why risk our engine to help out a few strangers, possibly vanners Evil or Very Mad At work

Went on a LR discovery 1/2 day yesterday. (Well worthwhile!). Re wading, the instructor said:

- the nearside vent is indeed the air intake
- the only reason LR specify a wading depth of 0.5 metres max is that (depending on load) it might start to float above that
- as long as you're happy it won't float, you can safely go to wheel height, taking care to keep the vent clear
- if unsure of water depth, reverse in; then if it gets too deep you can still drive out and it also makes sure the air intake - being higher - is clear Brian

Good idea about reversing in and that will apply to any vehicle I suppose.
Next time I go wading im gonna get a few onlookers in the boot so they can get some onboard action, they could even get out and push if I get stuck Whistle

Reversing works to a point, but DON'T do it if the water is flowing. The rear will float before the front does, so if you do this in moving water you get swung around to face upstream and your front wheels get dragged around and out into the deeper water.

If it looks even slightly marginal, don't do it. If the water is at or above walking pace, don't do it. If you don't know what's under the water, don't do it. Think you know from previous crossings but the water is deeper/faster? Don't do it.

Too many years of whitewater kayaking taught me just what water can do. 6" of water at 15mph will sweep you off your feet, 12" at the same speed will sweep your car downstream so fast you won't have time to undo your seat belt.

And while this is a Freelander1, this would equally have happened to a Disco, a Defender or a Full-Fat.

If in any doubt go round, as I said there are many cars drowned locally during each flood, Dont think LR's are exempt a local farmer had to repair the gear box on his range rover after water got in whilst wading.


Or do as a another local farmer does, use your combine harvester, its engine is about 10 ft up. At work
