Why is Diesel more expensive than Petrol?

I have been reading a number of articles recently in the media regarding the price of fuel, but nobody can tell me why Diesel has to be more expensive than Petrol.

After all it is a by product of the refining process for making petrol.

Could someone enlighten me please? MY13- TD4 XS Mauritius Blue, Privacy glass, Cold climate pack, Tailgate spoiler, Armrest pack, LED signature, Body side mouldings, Full size spare and finally Mudflaps
