Noise when windows open.

HI
Ive had my Freelander2 td since Feb this year and very happy, as most people. One little niggle at the moment is the noise created when driving with drivers window open.
When i get over about 80 KM/H, the noise from the wind entering the car is terrible, a low thumping that really get s to you.Either have to open an other window to allow wind to flow easier, or close them and put the A/C on.
Sure its a design fault , anyone else notice this???

Thanks

it tells you to slightly open another window to counteract the thud thud noise

I do not feel the need to open any window while I am driving, and I would have expected to get some wind noise when the window was open.

Thanks

Quite a few vehicles have this problem if travelling at certain speeds with only one window open something to do with air pressure / wind speed /car speed definitely not a design fault on the FL2 .Nightfox will probably give you the exact mathematical equation/law of physics as to why it happens on a later post Thumbs Up Laughing

You could get a set of the tinted perspex winddeflectors from the likes of Rimmers,Paddocks or Craddocks who specialise in aftermarket bits for all Land Rovers
or these from Formula 4x4

Gone - 2010MY FFRR TDv8 Stornoway and Ivory, Privacy - the pace of a TDv8 RRS, the incomparable grace of a Range Rover
Gone but will be missed- RRS Tdv8 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather

I think the optimum THUD THUD THUD is about 62mph,feels like your head will implode with one of the rear windows open....I always have to crack the front open or tilt the roof.

Window Noise

Opened a back window today - probably for the first time so came on line to see if anyone else had experienced the 'helicopter overhead' effect. Found this correspondence so see it is not just our FL2 problem. It seemed to start while we were in the 50mph limit (and no we were not speeding!). Tried opening a front window as well but this didn't seem to help, and we do not have a roof light. I agree that usually Aircon is a better option but not when you have a can of petrol in the boot? The FL1 had a back window that opened and was just right for this.
Has anyone tried fitting the perspex wind deflectors yet? I would be interested to know if it fully solves the problem?

HI,
Thks for the replies. Living in Spain i do have air con and so do use it all the time, but sometimes it is nice to have the windows open. The THUD THUD comes in at about 80km/h so not motorway speed, but just normal road driving speed, when you may want your windows open.
I have found opening the passenger window a small amount does solve the problem though, just isnt what i would call "ideal"...

this "booming" phenomenom has nothing to do with FL2 design.

It happens in all cars when just one window is opened (at least in my experience with Golf, Passat, Mondeo, A4, A6......).

I think the only way to prevent the shock waves are to open 3 windows eg 2 at the back + driver or passenger.

2 out of the 3 windows just need to be opened a fraction - just enough to equalise the air pressure in the cabin.

True, it happens in most cars. My prev car was a TT and there it was (very very, did I say very?) bad. I've noticed it in the LR2, but not nearly as bad.

A quick adjust to the window takes care of it.

Thanks for all the advice on this. Next time the weather is warm enough I will try out all the window combinations and see which works best. We had an FL1 before and never noticed this effect. Probably because we opened the back window if we were carrying petrol or a smelly dog!
