I too am pretty disappointed with the lack of development of the FL2, but as others have suggested I think the Evoque has a lot to do with it. I mean why would LR make the FL2 look stunning with a 5 year overhaul and tread on the toes of the much more expensive Evoque, which is a FL2 in a party dress.

I think regardless of marque the typical lifecycle of a car these days is around 7 years with a mid life refresh around 4 years in... and this is almost certainly usually only cosmetic with slight changes and nothing major like a dash redesign.

A lot of people seam to compare the D3/D4 dashboard upgrade which is significant... what people are forgetting though is that the D3 would have gone through a facelift and the dash did not get changed. The D4 is a new car (albeit it very similar) and so will have at least another 6 years I should imagine.

Range Rovers are slighty different as generally they tend to last upward of 8 - 10 years between refresh's (with the exception of the p38) and so they can afford to make more 'radical' changes to the interior etc.

All that aside - I think there are certain elements on the FL2 that are dated compared to the competition but they are all much newer! Hi .. had a 530d Touring before the FL2. Ended up on first name terms with the BMW recovery guys all over UK! Nice car when working, but (in 100k miles and 6 yrs - most under BMW warranty thank goodness!) it had more problems than any car I've owned from new. It was also rusting badly underneath and on the tailgate.
My 57 plate ex-dem FL2HSE diesel Auto has not missed a beat in 39k miles, has just had 3rd year service, brake pads, MOT and new tyres all round. Tyres and pads were perfectly evenly worn on all 4 corners. Main Dealer (Lancasters Reading) are first class and don't even think of ripping you off.
FL2 is superb on and off road, excels in snow and mud, pulls/tows like a shire horse and is a great little car to drive or be passenger in. Why on earth we worry about 'face-lifts' or the new gizmo's with which 'inferior' makers try to tempt the public, I'll never know.
This is a great little car - a classic, even. I've had Range-Rovers and Defenders - and FL2 knocks spots off them (and everything else I've tried) as a great, practical, comfortable and affordable car for people who do a lot of driving on AND off road. Follow the green oval! Resale values aren't bad either!
Just my thoughts - what do I know!
What I do know is that everyone who's been in my FL2 would buy one if they did the on/off road driving for which it's intended.
An example or two:
In the real snowy freeze last spring I went up our local hill (a 'king-of-the-mountains' prize climb in the 2008 cycling Tour of Britain). Packed and glazed snow, 1200 yds of 1:10 to 1:6. Straight up, not a murmur. Turned round a half-mile or so after the top to try the descent. Had to follow 1) a Subaru Legacy and 2) a (very recent) Defender LWB. The Subaru spun very gracefully down about 75 yards and ended-up on the wrong side of the road - facing the wrong way (and the driver probably in need of a change of undies) the Defender just skidded down like a 2 ton toboggan until he found a safe bit of bank to try to stop on. FL2 just sailed down under full control - on 2/3 worn road tyres, no drama at all. I enjoyed it so much that I turned round at the foot of the hill and went back up. Very old-fashioned looks from the other two drivers still trying to get down!
This winter (is it over yet?) a neighbour in his Alpha Brera completely lost it on a sharp bend in our driveway. On, again glazed snow. He stuffed it down a ditch and into a tree nose-down and both back wheels in the air - happily without too much damage other than to his ego. Out came FL2 and on a glazed-ice surface it just pulled 1.5 tons of scrap iron straight our of the ditch. Quite frankly, I thought that I'd just 'go thro the motions' to show willing - as I didn't think I'd have a chance of hauling it out.
So- by all means have a moan or two about the bits and bobs - but just remember what a superbly all-round gifted vehicle we drive. I've decided to stop being a good example and will now just be a terrible warning.....

Just been to the local Tesco Express and read the article in What Car... what gets me is that they still claim the FL2 to hav the worst residials amongst the bunch... and yet not long ago was I readling that the FL2 was achieving something like 70% and was amongst the top 10 cars for keeping value...

Now I dont dispute that the Audi and BMW can achieve something neer 55% but surely the FL2 does better than 42% as claimed in WC...

Auto-Express reckon that the 2WD will be worth just £10K in 3 years. One word springs to mind and it ends in ollocks!
