2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Caspian Blue

Question to people from Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany

I have been told that in these countries, tyres with studs are forbidden. Is this correct?

If so, I am surprised. Thinking of snowy & icy driving conditions.
I am told this is due to environmental conditions. Is this true, or is someone just pulling my leg? 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

I Leeds, UK your only aloud to have a Stud at the wheel, well in my car anyway.

As far as Italy you can use tyres with studs from 1/11 to 30/4 if I remember well. You are also obliged to have front and rear flaps. I will check better in the next days because now travelling overseas.

Hi Viking,
yes, indeed, in Germany winter tyres with studs are prohibited and not on the market. The reason is that in most parts of Germany we have snowy roads only for a few days in the winter season, and the studs would seriously damage the roads on the majority of snow-fee days in contrast to long and snowy winters in Scandinavia.
Besides this tyre technology has developed tremendeously. For example, replacing sod by silica in the tyre compound, and the lamella-profile of the latest generation of winter tyres have proved studs to be given up.
Only for some pass-roads in the alpes in South-Germany, Austria and Switzerland snow chains are compulsory with speed limit of 50 km/h.
As a summary, positive experience has proven during the past years that studs are replaced by the new high tech tyre technology with huge benefits on repair costs of our road-net.
