These days I decided to inspect brake pads, removed a rear wheel and found an incomprehensible rubber on a shock absorber. Does anyone know what it is intended for?

I think it's to stop the wheel moving in further, when driving in terrain. |

It is unlikely. This rubber don't touch the wheel in all its positions

Alex and Lars are correct. It is a tuned mass damper to reduce vibration and NVH however you might not see it on 11 MY cars me thinks. |
