As per title, I'm pondering winter tyres or all terrains.

Background- I have 19" rims with Conti cross contact UHP's on as 'summer' tyres and the origional 18" rims with worn out Goodyears that need replacing. So my thought was to put some proper winter rubber on the 18" rims in the std size of 235/60/18 for this winter or all terrains and run them all the time as I have with previous cars.

The two winter tyres that seem to be available to me locally are Avon Ranger Ice's or Vredstein Wintrac 4 Extreme's, and I'm leaning towards the Avons as they are cheaper for what goes for our British winter.

Alternatively my supplier has suggested the General Grabber AT2 but the fitment has not been tested on a FL2, it has by all accounts for a Vulva XC90, it will fit the rims ok, but whether it would cause the car any issues they couldn't say. So has anyone got any thoughts, experience or background that could help

Can't help with the size issue, I'm on 16s, but after a lot of research decciding which tyres to buy, I get my GG AT2s fitted on Tuesday. £375 for 4, fitted at my location, ballanced and disposal of old boots.  We Don't Care About Pot Holes !!

Used to have 255 65 17 GG AT2's fitted to my old FL2. No great problem with the extra width, tightest clearance is on the rears against the shock absorber body, but there is clearance, mine were on for over 25K miles with no problems.

Tyres were ok in snow earlier in the year, good in deep snow, but less good in thin snow/ ice, I think the rubber becomes hard in cold weather compared to some winter tyres, not so pliable. Difficult to know how good they were without a direct comparison at the time.

Overall very good tyres, don't ware quite as well as BFG AT's, which are the R.R. of tyres. Started to get a little noisy when worn - down to 3 - 5mm.

for winter specific tyres i'd go with the vredsteins,,

re at2's.. have them on he D3, I spend a fair bit of the winter in the mountains,, have had NO issues with these tyres in snow, and i've tried hard to get them out of shape,, they are just fine,

if i was going to mount pure snow tyres the vreds would be my choice.. no 2nd choice,,

Just want chunky tyres! So the FL2 can fulfill its potential and destiny!!

Agree with you though, none of the tyre manufacturers are carrying any extra stock esp. odd sizes.All cutting their stock / improving their cashflow. Will blame the bankers for my tyes dilema then  1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

Last two year I use the ContiCross Contact AT 255/60 R18
Except the daily on road motion, they have been tryed in several terrain / adventures (mud, snow, rocks ...) and I am very satisfied.

have to say the FL2 that was going round the course on the LRE day i went on only had standard road rubber on,, it got everywhere we did in the D4, no issues at all,,,

Hi All, just registered with the forum, but I'm not the quickest with the keyboard so please bear with me.

I've just taken delivery of my 2nd FL2 and I thought I'd share my experiences.

The part of Yorkshire I live in is made of clay, so for offroad use the standard Goodyear road tyres are next to useless, as they are ok when dry but skate all over the place when wet.

I've previously used Cooper Discoverer AT's and while they are a decent AT tyre they do slide around a lot when the roads are greasy so I wanted something else.

As I couldn't get my favourite AT ( BFG AT KO) in FL2 sizes, the nearest was a GG AT2 in 245/70/17. After contacting LR technical to make sure these will fit I ordered a set and sent them to the dealers (LR technical said no problem....).

Following fitting, the fronts had NO clearance in the wheelarch on full lock so the dealer removed them and refitted the standard tyres, refusing to fit the GG's in case of liability claims.

I now have £500+ worth of tyres on the showroom floor doing nothing. Does anyone know if these tyres will be ok if fitted?

elmerfud - That's odd, I ran G G's for some 30K miles on my previous FL2 with no problem. These were 255 65 17 which i think are a slightly closer diameter to original than 245 70 17, but are 10mm wider. I am suprised LR tech would suggest using a different size to original, it will throw out speedo and fuel computer etc enless you get all this recalibrated. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone
