I have driven FL2's with and without the spoiler fitted. I could not detect any difference between the two. In wet weather you need the rear wiper on almost all the time. IMO the spoiler improves the look of the car but I would not have bought one if it had not already been part of the HSE package. |

Aesthetics. Although it may reduce fuel consumption ever so slightly at speed.

someone said its for the kids to hang onto, although a quick swipe of the rear wiper usually knocks them off At work |

The spoiler serves no purpose at all, other than making some owners think they need one and spend a lot of cash to get one fitted |

it's sole purpose is to "enhance" the appearance and is not needed.

Wouldn't its intention normally be to create down-force, which is a function of drag, which in turn 'consumes' power?

Yes traditionally they're to increase downforce, which would have the result you mention.
