When I first got the car I tried it switched off and didn't notice any major difference to MPG.....used to get 33/34...still get 33/34mpg.

I feel that climate control is there to control the car climate regardless of weather and if MPG was a worry I'd be driving around in a 1.0l euro-mini!!!

Although if I was getting low to mid 20's I'd want a climate control that included a young lady in a bikini who wafted me with Palm tree leaves and supplied cold drinks whilst mopping my brow!!! Thumbs Up

FL2BJW and Northern Monkey,

The smell you describe from the air con, would you describe it as "Antiseptic Cream" smell? I'm still getting this in warm weather and have only had the car since 1st March 2010, albeit it seems to be reducing so am hoping it's going to dissappear eventually.

Am concerned someone mentioned a leaking Matrix.

I'm going to book mine in at the end of the month if it hasn't gone completely by then.

I had a Mondeo with manual Air Con. After the winter and not using it for a while it always smelt musty for about the first week of using it again. I spoke to an air con engineer. (we had a firm that used to work just down the road from us) He said that when you stop using it, the condensation stagnates in the system and that smells. Once you start using it again it flushes everything through.

I never turn it off... Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

Tim4848, No the smell was not like antiseptic, it was almost toxic in that it actually affected our breathing for hours afterwards. The good news is that the spray or conditioner? seems to be working as the residual smell is getting less. I think i will go back to having the aircon on all the time as others have suggested.

I have always been told by other manufactors dealers that air con needs to be used regularly, at least once a month, or else the seals dry out and the gas will leak out when you try to use it. I always left mine on in my previous FL2 and never had any problems.
