Info on Towbar

Hello everyone,

I would like to install a towbar on my FL2.
Could someone give me some suggestions?
Should I go to Landrover dealer or shops like ARB?

Thanks

According to the Hayman Reese web site (http://www.haymanreese.com.au ) they make a tow bar for the Freelander 2 ... code R2509 price $470. Search under vehicle "Rover"
I have read on other posts that the factory bar has a non- Australian standard plug fitted which requires changing. Let me know what you do as I am considering fitting one!
Cheers...

The LR factory towbar is $1500 fitted. It is Hayman Reese type but only 40mm receiver so if you need to raise or lower the hitch height your options are limited. There is the option of the Hayman Reese however you will still need the electric kit, this disables the parking sensors and enables a cool green trailer on your dashboard when the indicators are on, this is $350 or so and then it needs to be enabled so probably 1/2 - 1 hour of labour.

Is the wiring kit easily available, or only through LR dealers (where I assume its >>> $350)?

The wiring kit should be cheaper now that the $ is stronger against the pound ATM.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone. I will try my local ARB for a quote this weekend.

we have been looking at caravans recently and the question of having a towbar fitted to our FL2 came up.

I said that I had intended getting one fitted by the Landrover dealer and the caravan agent said that the Landrover dealer would not fit the towbar themselves, but send it to a specialist towbar fitting company ??

If I thought that this was what would happen I would take it directly to the specialist myself to have it fitted.

can anyone confirm that this is the case ?

not sure how long you have had the car or mileage, but any LR accessory fitted within a certain amount of time/mileage are covered by the full 3year warranty

remember the cars computer needed telling that the car has a towbar on, so you'll need to check that also with whoever you choose

Many UK car dealers will sub out the supply and fitting of towbars and electrics, as the caravan dealer says.

However, I'm pretty sure that at least some UK LR dealers don't: the towbars are LR branded, the wiring looms pre-made and have dedicated plug-in points (and LR logos on the 12N & 12S socket lids), the electronics need updating (for fog cut-out, reversing sensors, on-dash trailer indicator and trailer assist programs to work). The only way to know is to ask your dealer direct, for reassurance on this issue.

Watch the electricals

The Australian electricals for the FL2 is different to the UK version. Yes the wiring kit is needed and yes the computer must be told about the fitting of a tow bar and electrical connector.

However, if the standard kit from LRA is fitted it will lock your electric trailer brakes every time your headlights are turned on. Very dangerous at speed!!! The standard kit need one wire (brown white) cut to prevent power link between lights and brakes. This is best done at the rear of the car's plug.

Any capable auto electrican can do it but LRA dealers still don't seem to be aware of it. Regards Ub2

I have not told my car I have fitted a towbar + dedicated wiring kit, the warning light on the dashboard works fine, the only drawback is I have to switch the rear parking sensors off with a flick of the switch on the dashboard, easy and far cheaper than paying for somebody to press a few keys on a computer. What if there were no hypothetical situations?

I was booked in to get a Hayman Reese hitch an towbar fitted next Thu 25th but the Landrover service center rang yesterday to advise that Hayman have withdrawn the current product and will be providing a new one soon with different electrics, so I have to wait until that's available.

Does anyone know of any problems or deficiencies with the existing Hayman set-up?

Just had a quote from a dealer for a fitted Tow Bar and associated electrics - $2K. Just a tad expensive! Now looking for an independant installation but thanks to this forum, the electrics is just as important as the bit sticking out the back with the tow ball on it!
