Morning all.

I'm hoping for some advice regarding an issue with my 2009 2.2 Manual.

For context, 2 years ago it had a Bell uprated diff fitted, and the haldex was serviced and oil changed.

Out of the blue, it suddenly developed a droning sound from the rear.

Noise increased in volume and pitch with road speed. No difference to sound if braking, accelerating or cornering.

Changed the rear wheel bearings, but no difference.

So jacked it up off the ground and let in run in gear.

Sound was coming from the haldex front coupler area, loudest where the coupler shaft goes into the haldex unit.

Unplugged the haldex, sound exactly the same.

Removed the propshaft, sound disappeared.

With the haldex disconnected, and the rear wheels on the ground, the haldex coupler is solid and won't turn.

Lift the rear end and spin the haldex coupler, and it will spin the rear wheels.

Pushing up and down and side to side on the haldex coupler, can feel a small amount of movement.

Is this normal?

I was under the impression that in normal unpowered state, the haldex should be disconnected from the diff, and only engage it when its powered up and the pump increases the oil pressure/

Any help would be much appreciated.

You have a Haldex Gen 3.
I believe that the Haldex never fully disconnects all torque from the back axle.
The amount of torque is controlled electronically and is not a simple function of axle speed difference.

From your symptoms I suggest that you need to talk to Bell Engineering.

Hi.

It's a Gen 4 haldex, with the filter at the top, and the pump underneath.

I've ordered a service kit for it, and will strip it apart and check the bearings I think.

The diff itself is very quiet.....even the haldex unit itself is relatively quiet listening to it with a stethoscope......its the part of the haldex that connects to the propshaft that's very noisy.....hence why I wondered if the front shaft bearing has a problem.

If a new prop and serviced/repaired haldex doesn't sort it, then I'll probably book it in to Bell.........although i would hope it wouldn't be their diff at fault.

I too was under the impression that without power the haldex is dis-engaged from the rear diff. It shouldnt be locked solid with the rear diff when the haldex pump is unpowered.

You should be able to rotate the propshaft (jack up a front wheel) with both the rear wheels on the ground - because that is how you get at all the propshaft flange bolts to disconnect it from the haldex before removing the haldex unit. Jules

Hopefully found the issue.

With a couple of lads spinning the back wheels, could hear a horrible graunching/scraping noise coming from the haldex.

Went all over the diff and haldex with a mechanics stethoscope, and it was deafening just behind the front oil seal where the prop coupling goes into the haldex itself.

I believe there's a bearing just here.....from the racket it's making, even just turning the wheels by hand, I'm guessing the bearing has had it.

I'll take the haldex off next week, completely strip it down and rebuild it.

New bearing is only £13......plus a service kit.
