17" Tyres

Just bought a set of 17" wheels to put on all season tyres, looking at 235/65R17 or 255/60R17, thinking the 235/65R17 could be better in the snow(if we have some) or is there a better tyre size to fit on the 17" alloys?

If I had 17" non poodle rims I would put on 245/70r17

Unfortunately I have 18" poodle rims so use 255/60r18 so they are 6.5mm less in radius. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi Lightwater
could you say why 245/70r17 would be better than 235/65R17 or 255/60R17
thanks

Ground clearance, 235/65r17 > 245/70r17 you get another 19mm radius (ground clearance). The cheapest way to raise the car.

My 255/60r18 tyres are still 2kph under what the car says compared to Garmin GPS. You can calculate the 245/70r17 from there.

For soft ground you are better off with a larger diameter rather than width. Letting tyres down you have more ground clearance to play with.

I really wanted 17" but it was too much money at the time for 6 new rims.

The only thing against larger diameter is if you are doing a lot of towing. The percentage increase in size will be the same percentage loss in torque.

So for heavy towing I would stick with stock size.

Our car is at maximum payload but we don't tow when travelling. We have a petrol engine so it is a lot less torque than the diesel engine. But never noticed an issue at 2.5 tonnes.

All terrain tyres are a lot more solid than road tyres. I run my AT tyres at 30psi. Also very handy to take shortcuts around obstacles. The number of times we have appreciated that we can't count. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
