United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver
Look… no propshaft…!

Hello all… Smile
I bought my surprisingly immaculate 2007 FL2 GS td4 a few weeks ago in wales…
Car is genuinely spotless and drives beautifully.

I did not pay a kings ransom for it and the very genuine seller advised that it is only two wheel drive… due to the propshaft having been removed by his local garage after a loud rear clicking developed a while ago.

This isn’t a huge deal because I’ve had a FL1 with same thing… drove fine as long as I stayed off slippery stuff
However, nowadays I do go onto farms while exercising my firearms license and would like to have the option of all wheel drive if needed.
This vehicle has replaced my long-time owned Disco 3 that threw up one set of electronic faults too many and simply wasn’t worth fixing. I gave it away for free to a green laner.

So the freelander has no propshaft … every part of it has gone.
The owner said they paid £500 for a reconditioned rear diff…
Now I don’t know if that will be a complete unit including Haldex or what… no idea

All I know is that with no prop fitted there isn’t a hint of clicking or droning from rear, the car has literally passed MOT on Friday so no wheel bearings gone south

Before I buy a new propshaft and whatever else it needs ( bolts etc)

Is there anything actually fitted to the prop that could cause loud clicking ? Bearing etc?
Which would vanish with removal of the prop?

Or will refitting a different propshaft just awaken a sleeping can of worms..?? 😬😳

Many thanks for input

I can only suggest that you contact Bell Engineering for info and a quote of fitting Prop and Haldex.

Hi… the complete rear drive is still in place as far as I’m aware… (should’ve looked closer while it was up on mot lift 🙄)

I could see both ends where a prop will have bolted into

I’m pretty sure the complete rear end is attached.

I only get random ‘transmission fault’ warnings, it doesn’t light up instantly

Removing the propshaft is a way unscrupulous people hide a faulty haldex unit. Jules

Yes I fell foul of exactly this back in 2007 with a V6 freelander one…
I had no idea it was de-propped, dealer sold it to me without saying a thing.

It was only months later that I discovered it wasn’t 4x4 when I had to tow my fishing boat on trailer up a slimy slipway in West Looe Cornwall…

To my horror it span its front wheels on the spot … as the tide was rising… and my rear wheels were in the water…😱

Luckily a chap with a pajero hauled the car and boat up
Onto dry land… phew
He took a peep underneath my car and announced ‘you ain’t got a propshaft me ‘ansome…’

Didn’t keep that car much longer…

But.. this current FL2 was sold to me in 100% transparent honesty at a reduced price … not massive mileage … 131k… and I was made very aware of the fact it has no prop and a list of rear-end work it’s had done

Bit of an update… I phoned the MOT garage who gave the FL2 an oil / filter change and no advisories mot on Friday last week…
Asked his opinion… they do a lot of work on Landrover’s (we live in very rural west wales)

He said that he knows the complete rear diff/ haldex etc is in place because he noticed that they looked extremely clean / shiny new…

And that he’s worked on numerous freelander 2 where the centre bearing has failed and caused all kinds of noises underneath

His opinion is that because the car drives perfectly well without any noises with the prop removed… that the original propshaft was highly likely to have failed and was the cause of the noises.

He can fit a replacement prop if I want him to source one or provide a new one myself.

Looking promising 🙂

Based on your post it looks like you have a early FL2 with the Gen 3 Haldex like mine instead of the Gen 4 that most of FREEL2 owners have

I had a scrabble problem that I fixed for not much $$$$

Here is the thread

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic40750.html

Just in case you install a prop shaft and it scrabbles

Good luck

Paul
