new tyres

Hello, The time has come to buy new tyres...I have just been made redundant , so money is tight at the moment, I thought I'd try Comforser Cf1100 tyres. I have 19" wheels at the moment but I also have a set of 17" wheels, the price is about the same for both sizes, so I'm asking whats best? Live on a farm and tow quite a lot, any thoughts?? thanks mike

17" any day.

19" are poodle rims!

If you get bogged you can let them down. More chance of getting out with more side wall to play with.

I have 18" poodle rims. I wanted 17", but 18" came with the car & it was too expensive to buy 6 new rims. 2 spares for the outback. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

WROTE THIS IN MAY '22

Had Continental's cross contact as per original spec fitted in 2016; did 39,400 on deliberately downsized 17" wheels, across the whole of Europe, alps, Pyrenees, etc. Fantastic tyre, secure, smooth, stable. Changed them in 2019 for Pirelli all season; what a disaster. Thought there was something seriously wrong with alignment or steering mech,, had it checked three times. Car wandered all over the place with every change of road surface, potholes, white lines etc. I could even tell the sex of a dead bird! They failed MOT after 23,000 and changed back to Contis in May. What a staggering difference; the car is immediately back to it's stable, secure positive self with no wandering issues. Speak as you find by Continentals are now my default tyre.

When you say all season tyres, are you referring to pirelli scorpion verdes? mine has those fitted and the handling is diabolical, could well be tyres as they are approx half worn amd road noise is not great either.

I don't rate Pirelli tyres at all. My dad had a set on a new Skoda Yeti, wires started coming through the tread with only 15000 miles on them. He actually ordered a replacement Skoda Karoq and told the salesman if it came with Pirelli tyres he wasn't taking it until they changed them. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Live on a farm too - I use 235/65r17 Yokohama Geolandar G015s. Decent in a field.

Likely won't go for them next time, been doing some green laning and they're not incredible for that, I'll probably go for Toyo Open Country AT3s, or Kumho AT52s (if I can find any in stock anywhere...)

so it seems the 17" wheels are the most popular , I take it the 17s will bolt straight on instead of the 19s.
Has anyone used the comforser cf1100 tyres, I can get them for about £100 a corner fully fitted.

Do you let the tyres down?

It's why we have 3 ARB compressors onboard. Couldn't be stuffed waiting to air up. 28 seconds per tyre from 20psi to 35psi.

Having lower pressure tyres on soft surfaces is the best thing you can do. In Francois Peron National Park Western Australia, they ask you to reduce tyre pressure to at least 20psi. It's all the soft sand there. It's nice to drive on, but you will get bogged with higher pressure. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Yes 17s will, assuming they're off a Freelander 2 or a few other JLR models, all depends on stud spacing etc

The Freelander 2 Off-roading group on Facebook has a few people who seem to like their Comforsers, so probably a reasonable choice - no experience personally

Another one you could look at would be Falken Wildpeaks, also pretty popular

Yes, had them at 25, they just scrabbled a bit more than I'd hoped, and feels like a soft compound so got a few cuts etc

They were great in a field and on ice/snow though!

Yes ,ive got them on 2 freelanders, they come with 9mm of tread and wear really well, they are knoberly but the road noise is not too bad, good value with good reviews,The thing is even with more expensive tyres, guys on here have had problems with cracking, bulging and other problems.
