Australia 2012 Freelander 2 i6 HSE Auto Santorini Black
Getting the Fob Key Thing Out of the Dashboard

I have a 2012 Freelander 2, 6 cylinder and last night my car battery died and could not be recharged. When this occurred, I could not get the fob thing out of the dashboard and had to leave the car unlocked in my driveway overnight.

Never had this issue before.

Does anyone know how to get the key fob thing out of the dashboard if your car battery dies?

Any advice appreciated.

Why not use a 12v Battery Booster to get the car going? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 84k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

You've probably resolved this by now, by adding some volts to the car and allowing the key docking module to release the key normally.

Whatever you do, never ever "give it a yank" to get the key out. You have a chance of breaking one or both of the two "teeth" that grip the key body or one of the nylon gears in the motor unit. Once that's done, you open a Pandora's box of misery as you try to fix it or pay a fortune to find, replace and then code the new unit.

Personally, I think it's the worst designed thing on the car. I mean, why? Some designer somewhere probably thought it was a clever idea, but like so many things from Land Rover, something got lost in translation. I've had my unit out twice now following erratic operation and considered all kinds of alternatives. I practically have nightmares about getting into the car and the key does nothing. I've talked to a few clever people about replacing it with everything from a key switch to a unit from the later model. But the unit is so heavily integrated into the security system, nobody is willing to try in case they "brick" my car. So it has all come back down to refitting it and praying it keeps working! Life is an uphill struggle. Only the gradient varies.

Nothing to do with Land Rover. The Freelander 2 is the best 4x4x Ford. Yes, Dagenham designed the Freelander 2 which is one of the reasons why there are so many Ford parts scattered throughout it.

The Autocar magazine had this article about the LR/Volvo links via Ford.

Over the years Autocar has reviewed the FL2 many times

and I note that this weeks magazine reckons that it will become a future classic as prices on good secondhand examples are rising.. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
