Nokian tyres (bad result) Wheel Bearings

Freel2 Readers,

This post is about my Son’s 2015 VW JETTA with 74,000 miles. It has been a very reliable vehicle with the exception of the driver’s side wheel bearing which caused excessive wear on the tyre or did the tyre cause the wheel bearing to fail.

- The Nokia tyres were 6 years old and they didn’t age well

- The bearing that failed is not curbside but the other side

- I replaced both rear bearings

- can I expect my children to always come to me with problems like this or will they learn to fix it themselves someday?

- for reference my LR2 has twice the mileage and nearly double the years and it is still on its original bearings

Let me know your thoughts about any of the things that I listed or whatever else you would like to share.

Thanks

Paul

England

I wouldn't call that excessive wear, more disintegration, for a 6 year old summer tyre that's expected especially if you live in a highish temperature area, Nokia tyres(tires) are a better cheap tyre, but not on the Firestone/ Goodyear level, in the UK they're fairly good but wouldn't last 6 years unless permanently on the rear, average life is 25K to 30K miles, as for the wheel bearing, luck of the draw. I had a hire car 1600 miles on the clock and the wheel bearing had gone, I bought a wheel bearing from our local spares shop for a Peugeot 106 and it was dead in 100 miles turned out it was a Turkish. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The issue with the Nokia all weather tyre was high lighted here
https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic24457.ht...okia+tyres

I found mine where made in Leningrad and not skandiavia,
although I fail to see how a tyre can influence wear in a hub! DAVE.

Good feedback!!!!

Thanks

The tyres were made in Russia.

And I had read some negative reviews here on FREEL2 shortly after I bought the tyres

And I agree but I can’t prove that the wheel bearing likely failed first and then the tyre got affected. For what it’s worth I never heard any noise from the bearing. All of the noise was tyre related. After I replaced the bearing and went for a short test drive the noise was still there.

Only after replacing the tyres did it get quiet.

In case anyone is wondering the tyre shop is less than 10 miles away so I didn’t drive far with the new bearing and old Tyre

The Nokian tyres that I bought were a different model than the ones discussed on FREEL2 but I eventually got the same results.

I did really like the way the car drove with these tires when they were new but after this experience I wouldn’t buy Nokian again

The replacement tyres are from KUMHO.

Take care

Paul

The angle of the tread pattern on the outer edge of the tyre affects noise when that cut in the pattern is at right angles to the direction of travel the the tyre is at its noisy-est, as the angle decreases the tyre reduces in noise. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Motion,

Finland not Switzerland but I know what you mean.

I grew up not that far from Canada and the Nokia winter tires were legendary.

But that was a long time ago and apparently things have changed.

Where I live now it’s very hot in the summer and cooler in the winter but no snow.

Having said all that I did like the ride, noise and feedback from the tire and I am only disappointed in the durability of the material used

Take care

Paul

No idea about the tyres but I don't hear great feedback about Nokians.

The trouble with being a dad / husband / friend / brother in law / neighbour who knows how to use a spanner is there's rarely a weekend that i haven't something to fix or service. (Neighbours ride on lawn mower sorted out this evening already).
My son asks what he's going to do about getting his car serviced when I'm too old to do it for him 😆 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Finnish, yes! When the Finns made it, it was an awesome snow/ice tire! Thanks Paul.

Bob,

Your answer was exactly what I was looking for and hoping not to find.

Thanks
