Code P0709-00

Hello,

I am new to the forums but it's nice to see that there is such a large community for the LR2. I have been the owner of a 2008 LR2 for almost 10 years now (160k). It's been an amazing car for me and my family. However, recently the car had to sit for about 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I went to start it and it had trouble starting but eventually it did and drove like normal. The next morning I was unable to start the car and the battery/check engine light came on. I tested the battery and it was completely dead. Keep in mind the battery was only a year old at the time. So I went and got a new battery under warranty and replaced it. Now the car try's to start however it won't kick over. I plugged in my LR V3.0 diagnostic tool and I am getting a fault in the transmission. Code P0709-00. So far I have tried clearing the code and replacing the fuse (F2) in the engine bay. The car will still not start. Any ideas on where I should check next?

The description of the code is "transmission range sensor A - circuit intermittent".

Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what did you do to resolve it? Thank you in advance for reading this and replying.

do you know anybody with SDD diagnostics as this will help to pinpoint the fault far better than a generic code reader

Unfortunately, I do not know anyone with SDD diagnostics. Would this be the only way to really pinpoint the issue?

My list of DTC code says

P0709 Intermediate position

and the 00 means there is no sub-code.

It doesnt narrow the fault dowm much Im afraid.

Im guessing a sensor on the gear shift lever or gearbox is registering an incorrect gear position stopping the car starting - as it has to be in P or N to start. Jules

I know how to put the car into neutral manually. Do you think I should try that then try starting the car? I’ve been doing more research and I believe I might have to replace the XYZ transmission switch shift but I’m not 100% certain. Any ideas?

As a new-to-LR2 owner, I am discovering the value of investing in SDD.

As Freelanders/LR2 become old cars, the value:dealer maintenance ratio reaches a drop dead point where the owner needs to take over from what the dealer does. The value of the car is low, the frequency of visits for repairs rises and the shop rate at a dealer or even an independent is just too high. This is a business model to drive new car sales, and to avoid it, you need to take control. Luckily with JLR the tools to do this (SDD) are available to the amateur (you and me).

You will need a Mongoose cable, or a Chinese clone, and download SDD, which is available online. I was sent a link by a forum member, and hopefully he will see this post and send you the link. If not PM me.

Next, you need a clean power supply because the SDD checks to make sure it will not be flattening the battery. There are recommended (expensive) offerings, but I found a link to a Florida manufacturer who makes both US (120V) and international (220V) supplies for a better price. It seems to be a small company because when I called after hours (I'm in a different time zone), the CEO answered... calls forwarded from the office to his cell. Check them out at https://powermaxconverters.com/.

And finally, you need a Windows computer. If you get V131 (older) you need a Windows XP-Pro laptop, but if you go with V168 or that range, you can use a Windows 10 laptop.

That is the DIY approach to SDD if you don't want to invest a lot of money in digital tooling. If you want plug-and-play, visit https://www.jlridssddmongoose.com/.
