No auto light function on my GS. (I actually prefer this as I think I'm better placed to decide upon what illumination I require than a sensor).
Off gives DRLs and signature strips.
Side lights on, just signature strips.

Do you have the 7 LED round sidelight? If so, when do they come on ?

Yes I do Jules. They're on as DRLs as normal when driving during daytime, ie. all other lights off. They go off when I switch on sidelights, just the signature strips or headlights. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

The same as said above on my car. Just to clarify the signature strip only as parking lights. The signature strip stays on with headlights. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Use your new shiny OBD2 tool, scan, note all error codes, and reset/clear all DTC.
Switch off get a cup of tea then switch on again, start engine.
Check again that error codes have cleared
It worked for me when the rear lights were playing up.

Oh one more thing, check wiring at connector to lamp, for broken wires. Copper over time with vibration, will work harden, and break.

I'm rather emabrassed to say I'm not sure that there is anything wrong with the lights after all. Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head

We've had this car over 10 years and had never noticed that fact that the lights don't work as I expected until its been in gear- never noticed what the lights were doing whilst one of us starts it up - cos its always parked on a slope outside near the front door and we just get in a drive off.

In preparation for the MOT I had to replace the bulb in the high level tailgate stop lamp.
To then do a quick lamp test I simply turned the engine ON and expected all the lights to behave properly - as they have in every other car that Ive owned.
It never occurred to me that the car needs to be actually in gear - as it would make testing a bit awkward for a single DIYer.

I then fell down a proverbial rabbit hole. Whistle

When Ive tested the lights in previous years it must have been in gear prior to the testing.

What is the purpose of requiring the car to have been in gear before the lights work normally ? Jules

In comparison, my car is a 2019 Fiesta ST and its lights work differently.

The ovoid LED strip is both DRL and sidelight. - its stays on and cannot be turned off, irrespective of switch position. It dims when the headlight is on or indicator is flashing. There are no additional lights except headlights (separate LOW and HIGH beam) and indicators.

The rotary switch position OFF and Sidelight is in effect the same - with just the strip on. Jules

jules, it’s quite possible that this might be editable in the CCF, if you have access. I know it’s probably not something to be concerned about though, now you understand how it works. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. The Repair Manual does not say much about the LED type DRLs, but it does say that the FL2's DLRs operate under different (programmed) rules in different world regions.

It seems that they have only to be on when the vehicle is driving and may be temporally switched off to avoid confusion with indicators, and to save battery when not moving (in park or handbrake).

As normal the FL2 seems to have invented a complicated way to obey these rules.

This is the only useful mention I can see on web as it has wiring diagram, if no real other info.
