How does the PTC heater work and how do I check it, should I get heat instantly ?

I found this interesting video about the PTC and thought it worth sharing.

Several people seem unsure if their PTC auxiliary heater works or not?

The answer probably is yes it does work automatically when the outside temperature is low and the temperature dial is calling for heat until such time as the engine heat takes over.

But if you also have a heated screen the PTC won't work when the heated screen is also turned on because the current drain is then too high.[/b]

(If you have a "prog" button and use that it probably puts the heated screen on in cold weather which will also turn off the PTC.)

So if you are unsure whether the PTC works turn off the heated screen and try again.

I did not realise that the PTC heater was linked to the Heated Screen.

However, When investigating the slow reaction of my heated windscreen, I have noticed on my FL2 that the RH and LH sides of the heated screen work separately and the LH Side works well before the (Drivers) RH Side.

As I normally use the 'PROG' button to demist/defrost in the winter, I find that the (Air) Heater works long before the Electrical Elements. I believe that this is the PTC Heater ramping up before the engine is warm.

I am not sure, as the FL2's logic easily out-thinks mine. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I am not suggesting that the two are interlinked just that both don’t work.
