[Free] PTU - Collection only - Warwick area. Now gone.

Offering the PTU that was on my Freelander.
It is a recon unit that was put on by an independent Land Rover specialist via the warranty with the car dealership I bought the car from.
After about 10000 miles I detected a slight bearing noise I thought was coming from that area. By this time my 6 month warranty was a distant memory.
So, I took it in to another more local LR indy who confirmed where the noise was coming from. Pinion bearing.
The root cause was that the people who fitted it hadn't put quite enough oil in which I found out because I changed the oil which did help.
But ultimately, I had it changed for Bell recon unit via a very trusted local garage.
The splines look good and there are a couple of sleeves with pretty good splines.
As title, collection only.

Thanks Neil,

I have stripped the unit down and the crown wheel and pinion are in excellent condition with the wear patterns you would expect to see. The splines also look in very good condition.
The bearings on the crown wheel shaft are also in very good condition, the only thing I can’t check yet is the pinion shaft bearings which run freely without any problem. There is no trace of any metal in or metallic colour to the oil. So far it is in very good condition.
I am not sure whether to go further or instead take the box of parts to Bell for their opinion, I also intend to to put in a drain plug.

Any comments or advice welcomed.

Mel.

Also the pinion back lash seems good but if anyone knows what this should be please let me know.

This was the oil I drained out after it started to get noisy. It was better with new oil, but as I said, the service guys at work told me by the colour of that oil that the bearing had got a bit too hot at some point given the low mileage it had done.

I'm glad I had it changed as my trusted garage discovered that the big seal in the gearbox was out of square in the bore. This was done when the specialist installed that PTU.

So something to watch out for...

But glad it will be of use to you considering what you told about your current one...
