The gearbox oil passes through a heat exchanger that uses engine coolant to warm up the oil when it is cold, then keep it at operating temperature when towing.
The gearbox oil should have been changed at 75,000 miles or 10 years, sounds like yours is long overdue. Personally I would say 50,000 miles or 5 years.
Changing the gearbox oil can make a huge difference. Two options 1) change it all. 2) change a bit every service. AT this point option 2 is not on the cards, so either take the car to a garage that has the machine to "swap" the oil, or be prepared to repeatedly drain and refill until the oil is the same colour coming out as it is going in.
You cannot just drop the oil like in the engine, you will only get a litre or two (I forget how much) out as the majority remains in the torque converter, heat exchanger & valve block. So drain, replace with the same amount, start engine, select drive then reverse a couple of times, turn engine off and repeat 6 or 7 times. You can search and get a detailed way how to do it that includes monitoring oil temperature - good luck with that. Takes maybe twice as much oil as the gearbox actually holds.
