Hi my first post so please be patient. Problem I have is a 2013 sd4 freelander 2 auto , 90k miles, which has started to have the dreaded gear shudder, not present when first driven. After a long run this week , 80 miles, I checked for fault codes using My Autel MS 908S. No fault codes, the only parameter I found in live data which seems incorrect is that the auto box oil temp read 5 degrees C. Running the vehicle stationary for a couple of minutes raised the figure to 6 degrees C. Next morning when cold gearbox oil temp read 1. I believe this may influence gear change performance . Any thoughts ?

The gearbox oil passes through a heat exchanger that uses engine coolant to warm up the oil when it is cold, then keep it at operating temperature when towing.
The gearbox oil should have been changed at 75,000 miles or 10 years, sounds like yours is long overdue. Personally I would say 50,000 miles or 5 years.

Changing the gearbox oil can make a huge difference. Two options 1) change it all. 2) change a bit every service. AT this point option 2 is not on the cards, so either take the car to a garage that has the machine to "swap" the oil, or be prepared to repeatedly drain and refill until the oil is the same colour coming out as it is going in.

You cannot just drop the oil like in the engine, you will only get a litre or two (I forget how much) out as the majority remains in the torque converter, heat exchanger & valve block. So drain, replace with the same amount, start engine, select drive then reverse a couple of times, turn engine off and repeat 6 or 7 times. You can search and get a detailed way how to do it that includes monitoring oil temperature - good luck with that. Easy DIY just need two people, a new O ring for the fluid line connection, and 12 to 16 litres of the correct fluid.

My question was regarding the gearbox oil temp reading. Sonnax of america state that the temp of the oil is critical to the correct change pattern of the box including the torque converter lock up clutch. i was hoping somebody had managed to read the temp . The temp sensor in the transmission is a thermistor, a resistance, which is interpreted by the transmission control unit. This figure can only be read through the obd11 port via the canbus circuit which is the only link from the TCU to the ECM. I can monitor gearbox using an infrared device and hence I realised my scan tool readings are incorrect. The resistance readings of the temp sensor are correct at normal temps.
