How to strip down the rear driveshaft?

After breaking the CV joint nearest to the diff on the rear nearside, we have had the driveshaft removed and a new one fitted. What I'd like to do to strip the broken driveshaft down and install new CV joints at both ends so we have a spare driveshaft that can be fitted to either side on the rear should we need it.

The problem is, I can edit a basic video together but am a bit of an idiot when it comes to mechanics and fixing things Laughing. I've got the broken end stripped down so it currently looks like this...

I've cut the boot off, cleaned up some of the grease so I can vaguely see inside and am struggling to remove the cup from the shaft due to lack of knowledge. I've looked and I've looked and I cannot see any C-clips holding everything in. I've given it a few taps with the hammer and some wood to no success, so I've thrown in the towel until I can seek more assistance Very Happy.

A few questions I'm looking to get answered...

1. How do you remove the cup/bearings/cage from the shaft?
2. Does anyone know the part numbers or know where I can get a CV kit for both ends for a rear driveshaft?
3. What special tools will I need to get it all back together? From my research, it looks like something like this is needed for the clips? https://www.beta-tools.com/en/products/veh...llars.html

Thanks to anyone who can provide assistance Thumbs Up https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

To be honest by the time you have rebuilt it the cost difference between rebuild and replacement is probably not worth the trouble. Consider replacing the other drive shaft and then your rear drive shafts are going to be as good as it gets.😀

The driveshaft has already been replaced so we have this one kicking around Very Happy. 2 reasons that I'd like to get this one renewed.

1. I really don't like throwing away things if I can help it.
2. Normally when something breaks on the car, it has to be fixed ASAP so I don't get the opportunity to learn how things work and how things come apart and go back together. We normally give the car over to someone who knows what they are doing that will actually fix the problem rather than make it worse like I would Laughing.

Obviously if it turns out too financially unviable, I'll knock this fun little "project" on the head and throw the driveshaft away Smile. https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

I meant replace the other drive shaft, you will spend as much on the two joints as you would on a new shaft.
That said I understand your question for mechanical knowledge if you have better pictures on the inboard joint would be helpful, sometimes hitting the joint with wood to seperate it does not give it sufficient impact you should use a copper mallet or a hammer and a brass drift.

Normally there is a c clip on the end of the shaft inside the joint and a good clout will shift it do not use a hammer on hardened steel as said before copper or brass.

Dean you may also need some circlips tools
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=cir...m570.l1311

The end will tap off but be careful you do not dislodge the ball bearing they are a nightmare to get back in, as for the boots always best to use Landrover ones the boot clips can be pressed together with cutting pliers will get a pic of the ones i use tomorrow and post it up.

On my list to potentially buy:
A copper or brass hammer
A set of circlip tools

Plan of action if it doesn't seem financially unviable:
Give the outer part a good whack with a brass/copper hammer and it should come off.

One question that I'm still looking for an answer to is if anyone knows where I can pick up a new bearing kit for each end? On the diff side, our bearing cage was split into 2 halves. I have found the following which appears to be rubber boots, clips and grease ( https://www.lrparts.net/lr058030.html ) but nowhere seems to sell the bearings and the cage for the CV joint.

Even when I look on the JLR parts website, it's like the parts inside the CV joint just don't exist: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/p...and-rover/

I'm guessing that it comes back around to the fact that it doesn't make financial sense for places to stock the individual items when a complete driveshaft can be picked up for similar or cheaper price. https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

You don't replace parts contained within a cv joint, they are sold as a complete unit.
As others have said you'll find buying a new driveshaft complete with 2 new joints much better value than buying parts individually.
Take the parts you have now and bin them! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I know it's "very much the world and times that we live in", but is it me that just finds it a bit crazy that parts cannot be bought individually? In my case for example, all that was wrong before I got my hands on it was it needed a new bearing cage which might of cost a few quid if it was possible to buy. But the only option to anyone out there is to buy a whole and complete driveshaft for over £100 for a decent quality one...

I don't know if you can tell, but this throw away society that we live in does nark me a little Laughing. I really appreciate your help everyone, but it looks like the scrap man might be getting some metal and this little hobby project will be dead in the water Very Happy. https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

Hi Dean.
I am only reiterating what others have already said, got to be better off buying a complete drive shaft but in the link below you can get parts etc.

Either put your reg in or do as i did and typed what FL2 you have mine is a 2014 i think your is a 2010

Hi Artic. I've bought from that company before and wouldn't ever buy from them again. That was another expensive lesson learnt Laughing. I've had a nosey anyway and they don't seem to sell a bearing kit for the diff side CV joint from what I can see Smile.

I really do understand that when it comes to driveshafts, the only way forwards is a complete new driveshaft which is exactly the approach that we took on our car. To me, I will never get my head around how throwing away a complete drive shaft complete with CV joints when a few quid bearing cage breaks is the only option. Surprised I'm sure it's only me that probably finds that fact a bit crazy Very Happy.

It does make me wonder how many other expensive components on a car become bin fodder when a part that only costs a few quid could see it reet for many more years to come...

I guess the only silver lining is if I keep this driveshaft, if/when the other rear one goes, providing it's not the bearing cage that's gone I should be able to make 1 good one from 2 bad... Smile https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

Internal parts impossible to get, your only hope is to get another knackered one and make one out of two, crazy but the only way and your eco hope will be still no more, many many parts are disposable just our modern world nobody fixes stuff anymore just bins and buys new as we all know. 🥵
