Update to close out the issue...with full story for those who do a search for whooshing sound under load.
2010MY TD4 GS, 99k miles, only had it for 3500 of those so completely new to me.
Driving home, dual carriageway, though I heard a new sound under acceleration. Turned radio down, gave it a bootfull, sure enough, a new 'rustling' sound, think tree leaves on a windy day. As only under load, pondering if turbo may be an issue. No apparent loss of power, no clouds of black smoke.
Still thinking about the noise, and the engine light pops up to say Hi, solid, not flashing, so ease off until can pull over.
ODB kept in glove box, AP200, diagnostic shows nothing relevant.
Start up, engine light shows up, still solid, drive home carefully. No limp mode, still have full power, just the noise under acceleration.
Hours on the forum a some PMs with a Forum God, and the problem is solved.
The bit circled in red below has a split in it, just visible when poking around with grubby fingers.
After spotting this, I spotted the tell tale sign I should have noticed immediately, oil spray over back of rad / fans..
Trying to establish part number for this, but every motor factor only does the whole LR066429 unit. Finally Bennets could get just the small bit, and delivered this afternoon, but at a price that was, well, errr, no way!
Go to eBay, search for "freelander 2 intercooler hose", and up comes the usual multitude...but scroll down and there are suppliers that use the same diagram as show above, also small bit circled in red...bingo...part number in LR000927
Price including next day DPD delivery...£18.
One very happy newbie FL2 owner / budding mechanic...but still, why no Diagnostic indicator....?
Cleared all, ran scan again, still no relevant issues...
Cleared all, started engine...A HA... now I get code P0299-00 Turbo/supercharger underboss fault code! lesson learned, run scan with engine running!
Part arriving tomorrow, but all my time now committed until the weekend, I'll fit it then.
If all goes ok and fault is cleared etc, I'll leave this post as is.
If the saga continues, I'll keep Ya'all updated.I have a cunning plan.....!

That short hose is the most common one to split on the FL2. Some people carry a spare with them.Jules

Bill,
You have the famous turbo hose split…..must be the most common fault on FL2 as I have posted many times. Mine split last October…..no noise but Reduced Performance….and some MAF / MAP correlation codes…..as it must have got worse Code P0299-00 appeared……Turbo boost pressure low…….as it would be with a split pipe……….! After a good look at pipes I found a slight split in the hose….nothing like the split shown on your photo….!!!! All ok with mine since…….the AP 200 was a great help….also was the advice on this forum.
Hope you get it sorted….at least thé cambelt is ok.
