Buying High Mileage Freelander 2 - Am I insane or a bargain?

Good afternoon all!

I have wanted to buy a Freelander 2 for a while now and today a high mileage 2011 XS 2.2 SD4 has just become available at a local garage. I’m going to take a look at it tomorrow regardless of whether I buy it or not just to get a feel for it. It’s advertised as a 2 owner with full service history. I have checked the MOT online and it is pretty much spotless. Reg is RE60UGM if anyone wants to check it out. The car is also in pretty much pristine condition cosmetically. At £2,995 & 196,000 miles, am I nuts or could this be a good deal?

Cheers for any comments

Jono

Looks can deceive . A test drive may help if you know what to look and listen for.

Any warranty on offer ? Jules

France 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Lago Grey

Hi Jono,

I bought my 2010 HSE with 130000 on the clock and it did worry me a bit. Thing is, mine came with an A4 folder of receipts for everything ranging from a new EGR valve to a replacement cam belt. Just had new rear shockers before I bought it.

Depending upon your outlook on life, this can either mean its been "well looked after", or it's needed lots doing....Hmmm

It has a few rattles and an annoying "clunkety-dunk" from below, which I'm trying to trace. It tends to have a bit of a rythmic engine surge when first started. And! I think whoever designed the ignition key system deserves to be boiled in old engine oil, But I really like the car!

It reminds me of an old P38 Range Rover that I completely restored a few years ago and apart from the brilliant air ride of the Rangey, the FL2 is a pretty similar experience.

Test drive it as Jules has suggested and get a warranty of some description. But, at the end of the day, they're not perfect but they are quietly one of the best things to come from Land Rover. They like new fluids and a frequent oil change, despite the filter location.

If it all looks and feels ok after your test drive, then go on, go on, go on! Very Happy Life is an uphill struggle. Only the gradient varies.

The MOT Checker shows increasing chassis corrosion and suspension wear on that FL2.

So ask a garage to give you quotes on sorting out those ongoing problems.

Otherwise give it a good test drive, note any problems/noises, and again work out the cost of bringing the FL2 up to a safe, and pleasant to drive, standard.

A good FL2 is a nice place to spend a journey.

I suggest you look on Autotrader for a decent low mileage example for sale nearby, and take a test drive so that you can compare vehicles.

Welcome to the forum.

If its a DIY project Good Luck I am sure that you have found a potentially interesting car. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Adding to an old thread. I bought a 2013 130k XS earlier this year for £1300, off a dealer. Engine is knocking, but good for another MOT, no rust, clean inside, so worth saving. My other 195k2013 SD4 XS is still going strong, so they do last well.

OOPS!

Anyway I now realise that the last MOT I was reading was just after the post and it looks like the Anti-Rollbar Link had to be replaced and the Front Brake-Pads renewed to pass MOT.

As it was done 4 days after the post it may be the OP bought it.

It is still Taxed until Feb 2026.

Perhaps I'll try a PM to see if he will post to say his purchase was successful. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
