How critical is the engine oil grade/spec?

Hi,

According to the Haynes Bible, my 2010 2.2 diesel with DPF needs 5W/30 meeting Ford spec 934-B.
I've discovered the car I just bought had a last minute oil change using a fully synthetic 5W/30 which is Ford spec 913-C. This is the non-DPF spec according to Haynes.

However, how critical is this going to be in your opinion?

Going by how tight the sump guard bolts are (and the location of that masterly designed oil filter!), I was planning an oil and filter change, but much later on in the year. Life is an uphill struggle. Only the gradient varies.

With a DPF you need to use a C1 low ash oil plenty about.

You need C1 oil which is low saps, any other oil will be detrimental to engine/turbo's and DPF will clog quicker.

I put copper grease on the sump gaurd bolts - then they always come out easily.

I find a flex 27mm ractchet spanner makes getting the oil filter cover off much easier.

JLR didnt design the DW12 engine - it being a PSA group design - so I think they had not a lot of choice as to the position of the oil filter

It was used both transversely and longitudinally in a large range of cars.

From my experience of purchasing a FL2 with DPF and it being serviced regularly by the previous owners local garage with non DPF oil you will get much worse fuel economy until you change back to the correct oil.
When I purchased my SD4 with 64k on the clock last Sept the dash showed 25.8mpg average fuel consumption and the service records showed a well known tyre supplier that also does servicing had used non DPF oil since it was out of warranty at 19k miles. I changed the oil to C1 spec and now get 34.2 mpg even after a long periods of towing a trailer or caravan. Without the trailer I have had 42mpg on a clear run from Cirencester to Manchester.

Using the non DPF oil seems to clog up the DPF rather quickly so the car was very frequently trying to regen and therefore burning much more diesel than normal. My AP200 diag module showed there were hundreds of failed regens.

I don’t think using the wrong spec oil will have much impact on the engine as they are essentially the same engine except for the downstream part of the exhaust.
I guess it comes down to what is cheaper, leaving the wrong oil in for another 6000 miles and getting a lot less mpg or changing the oil? You could leave the filter as is for this oil change as there will not be a lot of the wrong oil in it.
As suggested, a 27mm floppy head ratchet spanner is your best friend when doing a diy oil and filter change.

Just checking. Has your 2010 definitely got a DPF. As far as i believe DPF were not fitted to all FL2,s till 2011 0n. My 2010 HSE auto does not have a DPF.
There is a way to check via the VIN number but i don't know that.

Thanks folks - much has been learned by me, after asking this.

Seems that if my VIN has a "C" or an "E" in the 8th character, it has a DPF - Mine has an "E".

I will be buying some different oil this weekend! Just not worth the potential difficulties and lower MPG by leaving the old stuff in there. Bendy 27mm spanner on order too!

A very large "Thank you" to everyone - hope I can help you at some point (obviously not financially, or with organ donation or anything like that) Smile Life is an uphill struggle. Only the gradient varies.
