Hi all, left Land Rover ownership a while ago now, but have realised in terms of mechanical knowledge, LR owners are far more competent than all other brand forum users out there 😂

I'd second the MX-5 - no experience of rebuilding one myself, but as a small, well-balanced 2-seat sports car which is fairly simple engineering-wise, you should have fun bringing it back & end up with a desirable "future classic"...

If you want to learn how cars, transmissions and engines work, then I would suggest something from the early days before electronics and error codes.

Classic Mini would get my vote but even basket cases are silly money now.

Thanks all. Hoping to balance it so it’s not so vintage that it’s not very safe on the road, and not so new that it is all ECUs. Unsure at which point MX5s drop into the latter bracket. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

A mk1 or mk 2 would be my choice. Mk3 started from 2006, some engine variants on the mk3 were decidedly dodgey.

We had a XKR coupe for about 4 years (2006-2010, from the Wakefield main-dealer), it was fun in its own way ![]() Conversely, it always seemed; - too plush - too complicated - too quiet/refined - too 'slow' to change gears, particularly 'kickdown' (one company did offer a manual conversion, using the Tremec 'box, same as used in a Viper, but even in 2007, that was quoted at £10,000+!!) That said, the answer to it all seemed to be "It's A Jaguar" It'd been nice if it was a bit more 'vocal' IF you wanted to overtake quickly, it certainly could!! (in 'Sport' mode) Until it was resurfaced, there was one road near my parents, that bore two lines of rubber about 20yards long ![]() It was a toss-up back then, as I wanted a Cerbera 4.5, wife wanted something more refined! Now this sounds awesome!! |
